Some supported versions of Win10 currently appear to have an error that prevents successful registry backup tasks that are enabled by default on PC running the operating system.

Win10 includes a task to periodically create Windows registry backups when the system is idle. These backups are placed in C:\ Windows\ System32\ config\ RegBack and can be used to restore the registry.

The current version of Win10, including at least Win10 versions 1803 and 1809, and version 1903 of * * Insider, reports in Task Scheduler that the registry backup task has not actually completed successfully.

Users and administrators who check the RegBack folder listed above will notice that although the Task Scheduler report operation has completed successfully, the folder is still empty.

Note that when you copy and paste the entire path, Win10 may inform you that the folder RegBack does not exist. You may want to open C:\ Windows\ System32\ config\ and then open RegBack to view the contents of the folder in Explorer.

You can validate tasks in Task Scheduler. Do the following to check it and the status report:

Open the start menu on Win10 PC.

Type Task Scheduler and select the result.

Go to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Registry

-- check the RegIdleBackup tasks listed under this folder.

Windows 10 should display "Operation completed successfully", although no registry backup was created on the system while the task was running on the device.

Running the task manually changes the task state to run, but I give up after waiting 30 minutes; when it comes to tasks, something is bound to be broken.

Windows administrators who used to rely on this feature need to find another solution to create registry backups until Microsoft fixes the problem.

If no system restore or third-party backup is available, restoring the system is a convenient task.

The issue has been submitted in the feedback center; it is now up to Microsoft to find the report and do something about it.

I confirmed the reported problem on PC running windows 10 version 1809 Professional and on PC running windows 10 version 1903 Insider Build.
