However, because Canonical is designed to fully support Ubuntu rather than other alternatives, there is a support problem. So schools and nonprofits need to make sure their hardware runs Ubuntu 12.10. What makes me wonder is whether this method is widely used. Maybe, but is it worth the twists and turns?

Canonical walking the tightrope

As things stand, I think Canonical is free to walk between providing mature Linux experience and making users unhappy. To be fair, there is nothing wrong with Canonical actively promoting Ubuntu, which will make Ubuntu more stable, but their way is so disgusting that users have to give up Unity desktops and hate the feeling of being forced. I hope Ubuntu will continue to solve the problem in some way, rather than asking people to abandon the old PC. Here are some of my suggestions for this incident.

First, hardware testing. But don't think it's too difficult when you're just looking for graphics, CPU, and RAM resources. Install lightweight desktops.

Second, mark somewhere on your site that if PC has been used for more than seven years, the installation is not very realistic. Another option is to list in detail how to use sufficient resources to enable the old system to boot and install Ubuntu over the network.

It is extravagant to expect beginners to find something available in a large number of documents. So, make a link on the download page and mark it with a simple statement. If Canonical will consider and adopt the above two suggestions, it will avoid repeated explanations later. Anyone considering using Canonical will have the same doubts as I do. Canonical should make Ubuntu easier to use.

The Future of Ubuntu

Generally speaking, I like Ubuntu 12.04. Some fixes to the Ubuntu 12.10 beta have solved some performance problems in Unity, and I think 12.10 may also be a good version after its official release. I have high hopes for Ubuntu and would like to see an official version available so that Canonical can load Linux on as many PC as possible.

But the Ubuntu deployment team ignores community concerns, which may reduce the number of users adopting Ubuntu on old hardware. At some point, existing Ubuntu users may switch to lightweight desktop environments and abandon Unity.

They do this not because they don't like Unity, but because the new version doesn't have Unity. For others, they have no choice but to upgrade the hardware. Of course, unless you are running intensive applications or PC is broken and needs to be replaced, it is not cost-effective to upgrade in order to be consistent with the Unity desktop environment.
