The system can be fueled by the engine or generator of the vehicle, thus reducing the operating cost in the process.

Laser weapon systems use "high-energy beams" to target and destroy drones and missiles.

A series of laser beams are used for protection.

The British government says it is developing laser and radio frequency weapons that can "revolutionize the battlefield".

The weapon, known as a directed energy weapon (DEW), will be powered by electricity and will operate without ammunition, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) said in a statement on Tuesday. The increased power system can be fueled by the vehicle's engine or generator, thus reducing the operating cost in the process.

Laser weapon systems use targets described by MOD as "high-energy beams" and then destroy drones and missiles. Radio frequency weapons "interfere with and disable" computers and electronic equipment.

The Pentagon said it hoped to develop three new DEW demos to study the potential of the technology and "accelerate its introduction to the battlefield".

Testing of the new system is scheduled for 2023 on army vehicles and Royal Navy ships. MOD said the experiments would be used to better understand DEW and "test the system to the limit".

The demonstrators were restricted by the Ministry of Defense's new weapons program, which aims to test and implement complex weapons systems. The defence ministry said it expected them to be at the front "within 10 years".

British Defense Secretary Penny Mordoom said laser and radio frequency technology "has the potential to revolutionize the battlefield by providing our armed forces with powerful and cost-effective weapons systems."

Plans are in place to test other laser weapon systems. Later this year, the dragon fire laser directional energy weapon demonstrator using multiple laser beams will be tested.
