Today, I will talk to you about how to install Linux Mint, many people may not know much about it. In order to make you understand better, the editor has summarized the following for you. I hope you can get something from this article.
If you need to install Linux Mint, please follow the steps below. If you need to pay attention to the features of Mint, please see the highlights of LinuxMint 18.3.
1. Download Linux Mint first
Linux Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" Cinnamon and MATE Beta official release download
two。 Check MD5 value
The download page provides the MD5 value of the iso file. When the download is complete, you can perform an MD5 check on the file to ensure that the downloaded file is complete. The specific verification methods vary according to the operating environment:
Linux environment: open the terminal, enter the command: "md5sum filename", and compare the result with the value provided by the web page.
Under Windows environment: download the MD5 verification software and use it.
3. Burn ISO files to DVD (this step is for those in need for reference. )
Now that you have checked the MD5 value of the ISO file, you can burn it to DVD.
Note: Linux Mint also provides CD images the size of 700MB. If you are not young to burn DVD, please use CD images.
Get a blank DVD-R (a DVD-RW should work, but there are some compatibility issues with this media), as well as your favorite label, and paste it on the DVD. While tagging DVD doesn't sound so important, you should, because if you don't, you may end up with 20 untagged and unrecognizable disks on your desk.
Put this blank DVD-R into the CD-ROM drive and prepare to burn the ISO file.
If you are running a Linux Gnome desktop, right-click on the ISO file and select "write to disk".
If you are running a Linux KDE desktop, start the K3B program and choose "write ISO Image" under the tools menu.
If you are running a Linux system and prefer to use the terminal, run it in the directory of the image file you downloaded:
Cdrecord-v-dao dev=1,0,0 linuxmint-gnome-i386.iso (the name of the ISO file you downloaded. )
Replace the number after dev= with the appropriate device number. You can run the following command to find it.
Cdrecord-scanbus
If you are running a Windows system, you can use a program like InfraRecorder.
Note: make sure that the ISO image is burned to disk, not the ISO file. A common mistake is to burn ISO files to disk as data files, especially for people who use Nero. The ISO file is a mirror of the disk, so it should not be burned as a file on disk, but should be decompressed and burned to disk. After burning, you should not see this ISO file on disk, but some directories like "casper" or "isolinux". Most burning software has special options for this.
4. Boot Mint to start
Insert the CD or USB disk into the computer, and then restart the computer. You should see the following picture:
Note: if you don't see this screen and your computer boots normally, it's probably because your BISO is not set to boot from the DVD CD-ROM drive. Restart the computer, press the F1 Magi F2 Escape key (or any key that allows you to enter the BISO setup interface), and then change the BISO settings to boot the computer from the DVD CD-ROM drive.
5. Install Linux Mint
Select the default "Start Linux Mint" option in the first screen, and then press Enter.
Wait a moment, wait for the live system to be ready, and you should be able to see the desktop.
Linux Mint is not installed on your computer at this time, it just runs on DVD. But now the system in front of you is almost exactly the same as the one you installed on the computer.
Enjoy the system and see if you like it. Remember that Linux Mint running on DVD is much slower than installing it on your hard drive because it reads data from a DVD CD-ROM drive that runs slower than your hard drive. When you are ready to install, double-click on the "Install Linux Mint" icon on your desktop. The installation wizard appears:
Choose the language in simplified Chinese and click "continue".
When it comes to the "installation type" screen, please choose your options carefully. The author uses a new blank virtual machine.
If you already have another operating system on your computer, you can choose to install Mint to the entire hard disk or coexist with other operating systems, or you can manage the hard drive.
If you choose to install to the entire hard disk, all hard disk information will be erased and Mint will be the only operating system on the computer.
If you choose to coexist with other operating systems, the installer creates a new partition for Mint using the free space in the existing partition. You will be asked how much space is allocated to it. After installation, your computer will have a startup selection interface to choose to boot a specific operating system
If you choose to install in a specific partition, the installer will pop up an edit dialog box to allow you to fully operate the hard drive. This feature is recommended only for advanced users who are familiar with Linux partition work.
Tip: the recommended size of the swap partition is twice the memory size.

Next, select your location on the map and click on the city closest to you. The purpose of this step is to determine your time zone. Confirm that "Current time" looks correct and click the "Forward" button.
Note: sometimes the installation wizard cannot accurately handle daylight saving time and winter time adjustments, so even if you choose the right city, you may see an hour of error with the right time. Ignore this at this point and remember to confirm that the time is correct after rebooting the newly installed Linux Mint desktop system.
Choose your keyboard layout. If you are not sure what layout your keyboard is, click in the text area at the bottom of the screen and type something with the keyboard. Make sure that the keys you press are consistent with the characters displayed in the text area, so you can be sure that you have chosen the correct layout. Some layouts differ only between quotation marks, numbers, and punctuation, so be sure to test these keys.
Click the "Forward" button when you are finished.
Enter your real name, user name and password. In the future, every time you use Linux Mint, you should use the user name and password of this account. Once Linux Mint is installed, if other people want to use this computer, you can create other accounts.
Give your computer a name. Your computer will use this name on the network. If you've never thought of naming your computer, now is the time. People usually use the names of flowers (dahlias, roses, tulips) and planets (Mars, Jupiter, Pluto) as computer names in the network. It's entirely up to you, but be sure to choose a name that you like and is easy to remember.
Note: uppercase letters, spaces and special characters are not allowed in the user name or computer name. If you are the only one using this computer and you want to skip the login screen, please tick "Log inautomatically".
Click the "Forward" button when you are finished.
The installer will detect other operating systems on your computer and ask you if you want to move some personal information. It usually allows you to move bookmarks, address books, favorites, and other personal information from other operating systems on your hard drive to the newly installed Linux Mint. Click the "install" button when you are finished.
After clicking to install, the installer will run in the background, and you will be asked several configuration questions. Wait a moment, the installation is complete, and the following dialog box pops up
Click restart now to experience the installed Mint.
Note: due to the modification of the boot sequence of BIOS before installation, please restore the BIOS and exit the CD or U disk when rebooting, so that you can boot Mint from the hard disk smoothly!
After booting, the login interface appears.
Enter the password set during installation and click "OK" to enter the system. If you see the desktop and welcome screen of Mint, congratulations, Mint installation is successful!
