Google recently released a new Delta algorithm, "bsdiff", which can reduce the file size of update packages by 50% or more.

In the past, when users updated an app, they basically had to download the app and a lot of supporting data. Since 2012, users have downloaded only increments or changes to APK files and merged them with existing files. Google checks the application version and then sends an update package that merges the developer's changes to the application with the application files that the user has already installed.

HotHardware said that the bsdiff algorithm takes advantage of different versions of compiled native code. Native code base files should be stored uncompressed to be as efficient as possible because compression interferes with the Delta algorithm. However, for compressed applications, data traffic can still be reduced by 5%.
