At present, EVE-NG provides two installation methods

1. Iso installation disk

2. Ova virtual machine template

In this paper, ova template is used as a simple introduction.

Note: EVE-NG embedded KVM,KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is a kernel-based virtual machine, which can be understood as a virtual machine system such as VMware Workstaion/Virtual Box or vSphere ESXi virtual machine system. Therefore, this paper first uses Workstaion to install EVE-NG, and then uses KVM virtual F5, Palo Alto and other virtual machines in EVE-NG. This scheme belongs to nested virtualization or two-tier virtualization.

The effect of resources on the experimental environment:

(please treat the 4 CPU,6GB memory allocated by VMware to EVE-NG as physical resources, otherwise you may not understand it.)

Memory: the most important thing, the bottom layer of EVE-NG is to run these virtual machines such as F5, Palo Alto, ISE and so on with KVM. It eats memory very much, and the proportion of physical memory and virtual memory is basically 1:1. When there is insufficient memory, KVM will swap memory, which will slow down the running speed of EVE-NG. To put it simply, if the memory is not large enough, the EVE-NG will have less virtual memory and fewer virtual devices.

CPU: secondary important, KVM allows CPU overload, that is, if the total number of virtual CPU is greater than the total number of physical CPU, such as 4 CPU, you can fake 8 or even 16 KVM vCPU. The specific limit ratio of physical CPU to vCPU depends on the single-thread performance of physical CPU, which is too weak.

Hard disk: secondary importance, hard disk size determines the number of KVM virtual machine images that can be stored, such as a Win-7.qcow2 image file size of 4GB, a PaloAlto.qcow2 size of 2GB +, and so on. The virtual device in the experimental environment occupies very small capacity and belongs to incremental storage, which only saves the changed part. If you are familiar with KVM, you will understand. If you have a need for this, you can wait for a follow-up article to update, which will teach you how to expand your hard drive for EVE-NG.

Network adapters: it doesn't matter, this determines the number of bridges you can bridge. You can also bridge the virtual environment to a physical device.

5. Other hardware doesn't help much.

Therefore, it is recommended that the memory is large enough, CPU as much as possible, and the bigger the hard disk, the better.

Turn on CPU virtualization, which is similar to turning on CPU virtualization in BIOS.

It is also recommended to turn on the time synchronization of VMware (when EVE-NG Offline, the time can also be synchronized)

IV. Initialize EVE-NG

Turn on the virtual machine and boot interface

Default account (underlying Ubuntu system login account):

Username: root

Password: eve

Prompt you to change your password after logging in

Enter hostname. Default is fine. It can be modified according to your needs.

Modify IP address

Set up the NTP server, pool.ntp.org is the default NTP Server of Centos, and change it to other OK.

Choose the way to connect to Internet. The default direct connection is fine.

After confirming the OK, the system automatically restarts and applies your above configuration. It is possible to get stuck on the EVE-NG welcome interface all the time, so it is recommended to forcibly close EVE-NG and restart it again.

5. Log in to EVE-NG with Web

It is recommended to use a Chrome browser with almost no errors.

Open it with Chrome according to the IP address prompted by EVE-NG

Default account (Web login account)

Username:admin

Password:eve

First choose html5 console login, this way does not need to install VNC,Putty and other software, at present, in order to be familiar with the system, everything is simple, in the future will slowly tell you how to use native console.

At this point, you have logged in to the web interface of EVE-NG

VI. Simple operation of EVE-NG

Under the System menu, you can view the system status

Under the Management menu, manage logged in users

Add a new user

7. Demonstration of small experiments

Go back to the Main menu, create a new Folder, create a new experimental case

Open the test folder and create a test experimental case

Click Add an object to add a virtual device

For the convenience of presentation, I have only added ASAv so far

The device name is ASAv by default, changed to ASAv-1, and other parameters default.

An ASA is added, in the same way, and a second ASA is added, named ASAv-2

Now connect the two ASA to a network cable

Move the mouse over one of the devices, click the plug and hold it down, and drag to the other device

Point Save

Right click on the device and click Start to boot.

Click the device with the left button again, and you can see the console interface.

Configure the device with an IP address to see if the direct connection can be connected
