Intel cancels CPU overclocking insurance plan

Shulou(Shulou.com)05/31 Report--

Intel has announced that it will abandon its performance tuning protection program, a long-term plan through which chip giants can insure their overclocked processors. The plan was offered at the launch of the company's latest Comet Lake CPU, but does not apply to upcoming Rocket Lake (or any other) chips, as Intel says warranty demand for overclocking protection has diminished.

"with growing customer confidence in overclocking, we are seeing a decline in demand for the performance tuning protection scheme (PTPP)," Intel said. "as a result, Intel will no longer offer a new PTPP program that will take effect on March 1, 2021."

Subsequently, the company clarified: "all existing plans will continue to be complied with during the processor warranty period."

PTPP is suitable for'K' processors (in other words, unlocked processors that can be overclocked) for the same duration as the CPU warranty, that is, three years.

In the meantime, Intel will issue replacement chips if the insured chip is pushed by the user and leads to death. Although only one replacement is allowed to prevent abuse of the scheme (otherwise, potential people may continue to kill the chip until they get the CPU that wins the silicon lottery).

Overall, this development is a bit surprising because insurance is not expensive-$20 for the standard desktop CPU and $30 for the HEDT model-so we think it will be more popular. Intel pointed out that insufficient demand will lead to the demise of PTPP.

In any case, looking ahead, Intel's new chips will not have overclocking insurance. Speaking of which, the Rocket Lake processor will land sometime this month-the latest rumor we've heard is that pre-orders could start in mid-March, before the March 30 sales date.
