This article is about how to monitor instances through ECS's built-in monitoring service and cloud monitoring service. The editor thought it was very practical, so I shared it with you as a reference. Let's follow the editor and have a look.

Monitor and control

It is important to monitor the health of your ECS instance, and you need to ensure that users can always quickly open your website and applications, or quickly complete tasks such as data processing and rendering. Aliyun provides services such as monitoring data collection, visualization and real-time monitoring and alarm to ensure that your instance is always running normally.

Monitoring detail

Currently, you can monitor instances through ECS's own monitoring service and cloud monitoring service. ECS's built-in monitoring service provides vCPU utilization, network traffic and disk IZP O monitoring. Cloud Monitor provides a more refined monitoring granularity. For more details, please see the monitoring item description. The following is the analysis of some of the monitoring information:

VCPU: Ali Cloud provides monitoring data of instance vCPU utilization (in percentage). The higher the percentage value, the higher the vCPU load of the instance. You can query the monitoring data through the ECS console, Cloud Monitor console, call ECS API or remotely connect the instance. The following is how to view vCPU usage after connecting to an instance remotely:

Windows instance: check the vCPU usage in the task manager. You can sort by vCPU utilization and locate the processes that occupy the vCPU resources of the instance.

Linux instance: run the top command to check the vCPU usage. Press Shift+P on the keyboard to sort by vCPU usage to locate the processes that consume the vCPU resources of the instance.

Network traffic: Aliyun provides network traffic monitoring data of the outbound and inbound directions of the instance (in kbps). ECS's own monitoring service generally provides public network traffic monitoring, and cloud monitoring can obtain public network and private network traffic monitoring. For example, the outbound bandwidth of your public network is 1 Mbps. When the outbound traffic reaches 1024 kbps, your public network bandwidth is at full capacity.

ECS comes with monitoring service

The steps to view monitoring information on the ECS Management console are as follows:

Log in to the ECS Management console.

In the left navigation bar, click the instance.

Select the region.

Locate the target instance and click the instance name.

On the instance details page, you can see the monitoring information, including vCPU utilization and inbound and outbound network traffic.

Click the icon to set the monitoring period.

Description

Because the aggregation is displayed in different ways, selecting the length of the time period will affect the accuracy of the display. The smaller the selection time range, the finer the display effect. For example, the 5-minute and 15-minute averages show different results.

(optional) Click set alarm rules to go to the Cloud Monitor console to set vCPU utilization and network traffic alarm rules. For more details, please refer to the alarm service overview.

(optional) Click more metrics such as view memory to go to the Cloud Monitor console to collect more data. After waiting for a while, the monitoring data will be updated to the latest status.

You can also use ECS API DescribeInstanceMonitorData, DescribeDiskMonitorData, and DescribeEniMonitorData to obtain monitoring data.

The following is a detailed list of monitoring items included in ECS. The granularity of metrics collection is 1 minute.

Cloud monitoring

Cloud Monitor provides you with an enterprise-class open one-stop monitoring solution out of the box. Cloud Monitor provides host monitoring services for your ECS. For more information, please see Host Monitoring Overview. The following steps demonstrate how to obtain ECS instance monitoring data from the Cloud Monitor console.

Log in to the Cloud Monitor management console.

"in the left navigation bar, click Host Monitoring."

Find the target instance.

(optional) if the instance does not have a cloud monitoring plug-in installed, click install update plug-in.

Click the monitoring chart to get the monitoring data.

Click alarm rules to set alarm rules.

Appendix: knowledge of bandwidth units

The difference between Kb and KB

The information in the computer is represented by binary zeros and ones, each of which is called a bit and is represented by a lowercase b. Eight bit make up one byte (Byte), similar to 0101 0010, represented by uppercase B, 1 Byte=8 bits (1B=8b).

When you use uppercase K or lowercase k for kilobytes, Kb is kilobytes and KB is kilobytes.

In the network traffic monitoring included with ECS, ps refers to / s, that is, per second. Kbps refers to the speed of the network, that is, how many kilobits of information are transmitted per second. In general, bps is often omitted when describing bandwidth. For example, the full description of 4m bandwidth should be 4 Mbps.

The relationship between bandwidth and download speed

Misunderstanding: what the bandwidth is, the download speed is.

Correct: take the 1Mbps bandwidth as an example, 1kb bandwidth 8kb memory 1Mb psi 125kbpspocket 1kbpsbank 1000bps

The download rate of 1Mbps bandwidth is theoretically 125KB/s, while some applications in the example take up a small amount of bandwidth, such as remote connections, so the actual download rate is often 100 KB/s~110KB/s.

Thank you for reading! This is the end of the method of monitoring instances through ECS's own monitoring service and cloud monitoring service.
