Microsoft is now actively working with the developer community to promote cloud services such as IoT and microservices as future trends rather than waiting for the market to fully mature. In an effort to preempt the market, test products, and demonstrate service capabilities, Microsoft announced previews of the following Azure services:

Service Fabric is a microservices application platform that developers can use to design cloud-based, 7 x 24-hour, highly available, resilient apps and services and lifecycle management services.

Azure Functions: This service allows developers to build serverless compute solutions based on event driving, where Azure will only compute expenses during event execution.

IoT Starter Kits: If you have development experience in Windows or Linux, the new IoT Starter Kits suite will help you quickly build prototypes using the Azure networking platform. In addition, early adopters can connect legacy devices and sensors to the Internet through the Azure IoT Gateway SDK without having to replace existing infrastructure.

DocumentDB: Improved support for MongoDB replication across Azure datacenters.

The launch of these (first) three new services is Microsoft's strategy to ensure its cloud services and products are leading the way, and AWS and Google are already leading the way in cloud computing. To attract more businesses and developers to Microsoft Azure, Microsoft must remain competitive across all product lines.
