However, the requirements for the forwarding capability of network equipment are not high at the beginning. With the development of computers and the continuous improvement of networking requirements, especially the development of TCPIP network protocol standardization, users 'requirements for network transmission rates are constantly improving. The forwarding capability of network equipment has gradually become the focus of attention. Therefore, FPGA-based, NP-based (Network Processor), ASIC-based network devices have appeared one after another and are applied to different scenarios.

With the gradual "integrated circuit" of network equipment hardware, network applications have gradually become the focus of more attention from users. If rapid expansion, visualization, forwarding efficiency can be improved again, the security of the whole network, QoS of the whole network, etc. are gradually taken seriously. SDN (software-defined networking) was born.

SDN originated from Professor Nick's Clean Slate project. In 2006, Nick's team first proposed a logically centralized enterprise security solution, opening the door to centralized security solutions. Then in 2007, Nick and his team founded Nicira in Silicon Valley, the first startup in SDN history. In 2011, the Open Web Foundation ONF was born and hosted the Open Web Summit. SDN has only been around for ten years since its birth. It was really applied in the network in 2012 and was deployed in Google's data center.

SDN is a technology that reconstructs the existing network architecture to separate network control and forwarding, forming a logically centralized unified controller, and then opening software programmable interfaces on the controller for service invocation to achieve the purpose of flexible network configuration. Traditional network architecture is defined by switches, routers and other network infrastructure to transmit network traffic, just like highways and railways, the direction of each station to the next station is determined by the ticket you buy, you can not change the direction and distance you want to go. Although SDN was not born for a long time, it has made great progress. SDN related startups have mushroomed, traditional network equipment vendors have also thrown olive branches to SDN, and major data centers and network operators have carried out technical research and various attempts in SDN, intending to show their hands and feet in the era of SDN. SDN already has a relatively complete technical system support, OpenFlow protocol is an important technology for its implementation. However, due to commercial interests, historical evolution and other reasons, various manufacturers have different understandings of SDN, and the controller software implemented by many large manufacturers can often only control their own hardware devices, which actually violates the original intention of SDN architecture design.
