Most exchange server configuration data is stored in the active Directory, so all exchange server roles must contact the domain controller to request their configuration data. This information is stored in an active catalog database called configuration partitions and is copied to domain controllers throughout the forest.

Mailbox server:

The Mailbox server must query the active Directory to authenticate users, enumerate mailbox permissions, find individual mailbox restrictions, and determine mailboxes on specific servers. They also require access to the global catalog server to find e-mail addressing information, distribution list membership informationization, and other data related to message routing.

Client access server:

The client access server needs to access the active Directory to find information about user, Exchange ActiveSync, and Outlook Web application user restrictions.
