In this issue, the editor will bring you a brief introduction and history of CentOS. The article is rich in content and analyzes and narrates it from a professional point of view. I hope you can get something after reading this article.

CentOS is an acronym for Community Enterprise Operating System (Community Enterprise operating system) and is a 100% rebuilt RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux). Although RHEL costs money, CentOS is a free, community-supported enterprise Linux distribution. Developers and companies that are good at Linux and don't want to pay for RHEL support always choose CentOS to save money and get enterprise software.

But now the free ride is over! Red Hat announced that as a rebuilt version of RHEL 8, CentOS Linux 8 will end in 2021.

CentOS Project History

The CentOS project, called CentOS 2, began in May 2004 and is derived from RHEL 2.1AS (Advanced Server). It immediately received a warm welcome among Linux enthusiasts, web hosting companies, developers and the HPC community. CentOS provides free enterprise-level software with self-help capabilities, while community support is driven by email lists or online forums. This is a good way to save money when you no longer need support or training contracts.

What is CentOS Stream?

The CentOS project later shifted its focus to the fact that CentOS Stream,Centos Stream is a rolling release of Linux that exists between the upstream development of Fedora Linux and the downstream development of RHEL. You can think of CentOS Streams as a version of the latest Red Hat Linux feature. In other words, CentOS Stream is a rolling release of RHEL. It acts as a gateway between Fedora and CentOS.

Next year, we will shift our focus from rebuilding RHEL's CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream. CentOS Stream will be the upstream (development) branch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In other words, Fedora will still be the first upstream in the future, but after RHEL releases a new version, CentOS Stream will roll over and feed mature updates back into RHEL.

Fedora Linux ➡️ CentOS Stream ➡️ RHEL

Of course, at the end of CentOS Linux 8, you can consider migrating to CentOS Stream 8, which will be updated regularly like the traditional CentOS Linux version. Keep in mind, however, that this is a rolling release in the middle of RHEL and is not recommended for use in a production environment.

No impact on CentOS 7 for the time being

CentoS 7 will continue to be supported throughout the RHEL 7 life cycle (end of 2024). Therefore, there is no impact on CentOS 7 users for the time being.

The main advantage of CentOS is that it provides 100% binary compatibility with RHEL. Red Hat's change will definitely have an impact on CentOS users.

The above is the brief introduction and history of CentOS shared by the editor. If you happen to have similar doubts, you might as well refer to the above analysis to understand. If you want to know more about it, you are welcome to follow the industry information channel.
