LuLu's initial intention was to create an easy-to-use firewall, so there are limitations in its use. Some of these shortcomings will be supplemented in subsequent development, and for some designs we have already determined that we will not add them.

LuLu is designed to monitor only outgoing network connections and can be used in conjunction with Apple's built-in firewall (to block unauthorized incoming connections).

Currently, LuLu only supports 'process level' rules, which means processes (or applications) are allowed to connect to the network. This also means that LuLu, like other firewalls, will be let through if legitimate (permitted) processes are abused by malicious code.

single-user

Currently, LuLu only supports single-user installation. Later versions may allow multiple users to install it on the same system.

Self-defense mechanisms

We all know that there is no absolute security, and any security mechanism has the possibility of being bypassed. As a result, Lu Lu (currently) has designed and implemented very few self-defense mechanisms. For example, an attacker could enumerate all running processes, find and kill the LuLu component responsible for alerting (via sigkill).

limited functionality

Since LuLu is still in Alpha, some features are not yet implemented. For example, LuLu displays alert windows that currently contain only the IP address of the remote endpoint, not the URL. Please keep an eye on updates to this project!

build

I recommend building LuLu in Xcode (although you'll need to remove the code signing restrictions or replace them with your own Apple Developer/Kernel Code Signing Certificate).

installation

Currently, LuLu must be installed via the command line. You can download the pre-built binary file/component from the release page, and then execute the configuration script (configure.sh) as root using the-install command:
