How to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

Step-by-step instructions for installing Kali Linux on VirtualBox

We will use a custom Kali Linux image made specifically for VirtualBox. Of course, you can also download Kali Linux's ISO file and create a new virtual machine, but why do it when you have a simple alternative?

1. Download and install VirtualBox

All you need to do is download and install VirtualBox from the official Oracle website.

After downloading the installer, simply double-click it to install VirtualBox. It's the same with installing VirtualBox on Ubuntu / Fedora Linux.

2. Download the ready Kali Linux virtual image

After VirtualBox is successfully installed, go to the download page of Offensive Security to download the virtual machine image for VirtualBox. If you change your mind and want to use VMware, there are also some for it.

As you can see, the file size is much larger than 3 GB, you should use torrent or use the download manager to download it.

3. Install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

Once you have installed VirtualBox and downloaded the Kali Linux image, you can simply import it into VirtualBox to make it work.

Here is how to import the VirtualBox image of Kali Linux:

Step 1: start VirtualBox. You will notice that there is a "Import" button, click it.

Step 2: next, browse to the file you just downloaded and select it to import (as you can see in the following figure). The file name should start with "kali linux" and end with the ".ova" extension.

Step 3: now you will see the settings for the virtual machine you want to import. You can customize them. It's your freedom. If you want to use the default settings, that's fine.

You need to choose a path with enough storage space. I would never recommend a C: drive on Windows.

Import a hard drive in VDI mode

Here, a hard drive in VDI mode means that the hard drive is actually mounted by allocating its storage space settings.

When you are finished setting up, click "Import" and wait for a while.

Step 4: you will now see that the virtual machine is listed. So, just click "Start" to start it.

You may initially have an error due to USB port 2.0 controller support, you can disable it to fix this problem, or you can simply follow the on-screen instructions to install another package to fix it. It's done now!
