In this issue, the editor will bring you about the role of the files in the VMware virtual machine folder. The article is rich in content and analyzes and describes for you from a professional point of view. I hope you can get something after reading this article.

The role of each file in the VMware virtual machine folder

The file management of the virtual machine is performed by VMware Workstation.

A virtual machine is generally stored in the host in the form of a series of files

These files are typically in the directory created by workstation for the virtual machine.

These key files and their extensions are listed here.

In the following example, it represents the name of the virtual machine created.

.log file

File type description: text fil

.log or vmware.log

This file records the debugging and running of the virtual machine by VMware Workstation.

These files are very useful for us to make fault diagnosis when we encounter problems.

.nvram file

File type description: VMware virtual machine BIOS

.nvram

This file stores virtual machine BIOS status information.

.vmx file

File type description: VMware virtual machine configuration

.vmx

This file is the configuration file of the virtual machine and stores all the configuration of the virtual machine according to the virtual machine wizard or virtual machine editor.

Sometimes you need to manually change the configuration file to make changes to the hardware of the virtual machine. Can be edited using a text editor.

If the host is Linux, using the VM virtual machine, the profile will have a .cfg extension.

.vmdk file

File type description: VMware virtual disk file

.vmdk or-s###.vmdk

This is the disk file of the virtual machine, which stores the information in the hard drive of the virtual machine.

A virtual machine can consist of one or more virtual disk files.

If you specify a virtual machine disk file as a separate file when you create a new virtual machine, only one .vmdk file will be created.

This file includes the virtual machine disk partition information, as well as all the data of the virtual machine disk.

As the data is written to the virtual disk, the virtual disk file becomes larger, but it is always the only disk file.

If you specify a separate disk file per 2GB when you create a new virtual machine, the total size of the virtual disk determines the number of virtual disk files.

A .vmdk file and multiple-s###.vmdk files will be created (slots # is the disk file number)

The .vmdk file contains only disk partition information, and multiple-s###.vmdk files store disk data information.

As data is written to a virtual disk file, the virtual disk file becomes larger until the file size is 2GB

The new data will then be written to other disk files numbered as slots.

If all the space is allocated when the virtual disk is created, the files will initially have the maximum size and will no longer be larger.

If the virtual machine uses the physical hard disk directly instead of the virtual disk, the virtual disk file holds the partition information that the virtual machine can access.

Earlier versions of VMware products used the .dsk extension to represent virtual disk files.

-. Vmdk

The file is automatically created when the virtual machine has one or more snapshots.

This file records all the disk data contents of the virtual machine when a snapshot is created.

# is a numeric number, which automatically increases according to the number of snapshots.

.vmsd file

File type description: VMware snapshot metadata

.vmsd

This file stores information and metadata about virtual machine snapshots.

.vmsn file

File type description: VMware virtual machine snapshot

-Snapshot.vmsn

When the virtual machine takes a snapshot, the file is automatically created. There will be several such files for every few snapshots.

This is the status information file of the virtual machine snapshot, which records the status information of the virtual machine when the snapshot is taken.

# # is a numeric number, and the number of snapshots increases automatically.

.vmem file

File type description: VMEM

-. Vmem

This file is the virtual machine memory page file, which backs up the memory information running in the client.

This file exists only when the virtual machine is running or after a crash.

.vmss file

File type description: VMware suspended virtual machine state

.vmss

This file is used to store information when the virtual machine is in a suspended state.

Some earlier versions of VM products use .std to represent this file.

.vmtm file

File type description: VMware team configuration

.vmtm

This file is the configuration file for the virtual group Team. It usually exists in the folder of the virtual group Team.

.vmxf file

File type description: VMware team member

.vmxf

This file is the secondary configuration file for the virtual machine in the virtual group team.

This file still exists when a virtual machine is removed from the virtual group team.

This is the role of the files in the VMware virtual machine folder shared by the editor. If you happen to have similar doubts, you might as well refer to the above analysis to understand. If you want to know more about it, you are welcome to follow the industry information channel.
