What is a hybrid cloud?

Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

Hybrid cloud is one of the frontier terms of IT to make normal evolutionary measures look cooler. Cloud providers such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft encourage companies to close internal data centers and migrate all infrastructure to the cloud. This is the "super-converged" data center strategy.

Transfer infrastructure

For startups, the super-converged data center strategy is a good choice without the need to buy their own IT infrastructure. ICloud,Dropbox, Amazon and other SaaS and Web-based services have created products for the cloud, but this does not apply to the way cloud providers develop around the world. Since the 1950s and the IBM mainframe era, the company has designed and operated its own IT infrastructure and wants to migrate to cloud computing as soon as possible, but this cannot be done overnight. (it seems that all companies are turning to cloud computing, but are they really like that? What is the extent to which the company actually uses the cloud?)

Although many industry giants are working on cloud computing migration, the company's transformation is hampered by a number of reasons, including rewriting applications, the cost of running in a new environment, and the simple "if it's not broken." the mentality of "not solving it" and other factors hinder the transformation of the company. This is because when a company buys a storage server from EMC,IBM or anyone else, they expect to depreciate over the same period of time for five years or more, and moving the storage to the cloud will mean that the device needs to be cancelled, and even if the cloud is cheaper, the hardware is expensive.

Inevitably, the old systems that existing systems and new systems are still using, with the extension of existing systems, migrate to the cloud, and you have to mix with some of the local storage in the cloud. For example, one of our clients is Hollywood Film Studios, which contains a warehouse full of LTO tapes and a large robotic tape library. Due to the slow nature, high maintainability and astronomical cost associated with current storage methods, they want to get rid of this technology and eventually migrate all their content to the cloud. However, as large amounts of data exist, they keep the system alive rather than extending it, sending all new things to the cloud and, by definition, running on a typical hybrid cloud model.

Hybrid power system

Leaving aside the economics and inertia that drive these decisions, there are good technical reasons to maintain hybrid clouds, and some processes require specific or highly tuned equipment to function properly. Video editing, for example, must manipulate large amounts of files in real time to store and deal with high-bandwidth problems, so that my cloud can work properly.

Another definition of "hybrid cloud" is propagating work between several cloud providers. Amazon and other companies do their best to lock you in their cloud environment by offering dozens or hundreds of cloud-based services, so that everything you need comes from one vendor, however, the way these suppliers price their products is incredible. For example, Amazon's S3 cloud storage costs about 2.3 cents / GB per month, but if you want to retrieve this data over the Internet, you can pay up to 9 cents / GB to take it out, obviously, because they want to keep you in their own cloud.

These strategies are not the most effective in the long run, and IBM's attempt to lock customers in an expensive all-IBM environment led to the emergence of companies that started picking parts of the IBM building. It is worth noting that EMC began to make disk drives compatible with IBM. Their statement is simple: if you can unplug the IBM drive and insert the EMC drive and work in exactly the same way, why pay more than 30% for the IBM drive? Today, cloud providers are springing up everywhere, and these suppliers are picking Amazon's fortresses, and companies like Packet.net are offering high-performance, low-cost cloud computers, fast and Limelight series offering content delivery networks that are faster and cheaper than Amazon's, and mustard provides cloud storage at five prices that are six times the price of Amazon S3 storage.

As a result, the customer said, "I will perform some of my processes in Amazon's cloud, but I will use Limelight for content distribution and I will store all the data in Wasabi." This is where my hybrid cloud solution predicts it will dominate over the next decade. When there are better, faster, and cheaper functional alternatives, customers will not tolerate being locked in a supplier's ecosystem.

In short, hybrid clouds will continue to exist, but because the hybrid approach is a natural part of IT infrastructure development, the term "hybrid cloud" may gradually disappear. Every data center has a combination of hardware, such as Dell, Cisco, Juniper Networks, Netapp, etc., and no one would call it a "hybrid hardware environment." So the question has become: do we really need to define a "hybrid cloud"? "when will it inevitably become the norm?
