At its fall event, Apple announced that it plans to release its tablet operating system, iPad OS, on Sept. 30, with support for older iPad models introduced in the past few years.

While the system is basically just a name change, technically it's the iPad OS's first ever debut. In June, Apple announced that it would split iOS, which runs on the iPhone and iPad, into separate operating systems for its phones and tablets. It's unclear exactly how different the two products are, but Apple is starting to distinguish them clearly as it adds more powerful features to the iPad.

The iPad OS comes with many highly anticipated features, including widgets Apple eventually added to its home screen. It also brings "desktop-level" browsing to Safari, updates the Files app, and improves multitasking.

The operating system will debut on the new 10.2-inch iPad, and Apple will begin accepting pre-orders for the product from today and will be available in stores on September 30. If you already own an iPad Air 2 or later, iPad Pro, 5th generation iPad or later, or iPad mini 4 or later, you can install the system update on your existing tablet.
