What on earth is LPDDR5?

As mentioned by Hongwang Semiconductor before, LPDDR, whose full name is Low Power Double Data Rate SDRAM, is a kind of DDR, also known as mDDR (Mobile DDR SDRAM). It is a communication standard developed by the American JEDEC solid State Technology Association (JEDEC Solid State Technology Association) for low-power memory. It is famous for low power consumption and small size, and is specially used for mobile electronic products.

After the development of LPDDR2 and LPDDR3, LPDDR4 began to shine on mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets, which greatly improved the performance of smart products. The capacity of LPDDR3 memory technology on mobile phones is generally 2G to 4G, while the bandwidth and frequency of LPDDR4 is twice that of LPDDR memory, which supports the maximum capacity of 8GB, which makes daily-used smartphones more likely in terms of function and use.

Before LPDDR5 came out, LPDDR4X and LPDDR4 were used in the memory of the mainstream flagship mobile phones on the market. Because the two often appear at the same time and their names are very similar, it is easy to be confused. In fact, LPDDR4X is not the next generation of LPDDR4 memory, but can be seen as a power-saving and optimized version of LPDDR4.

Compared with LPDDR4,LPDDR4X, it optimizes the power consumption of memory and improves the speed of memory. At present, Hongwang Semiconductor has mass-produced 8GB LPDDR4X memory, and under the large capacity boost, it has more advantages in storage speed, which plays a very obvious role in running oversized games or recording 4K video, with lower power consumption, faster operation and more power saving.

At the same operating rate, the power consumption of LPDDR5 is 14% lower than that of LPDDR4x. The industry says LPDDR5 can extend the battery life of mobile phones by 5 to 10 per cent. In addition, LPDDR5 introduces data replication (Data-Copy) and write X (Write-X), which can copy data from a single array directly to other pins. Depending on the excellent data transfer rate, it can fully release the performance of the processor through high-speed operation, allowing it to process data faster, thus entering "sleep mode" earlier, and not having to work for a long time and high load.

With the rapid increase in the number of new models on the market for 5G mobile phones, there has been a rapid downward trend in prices. However, it is undeniable that, in addition to being able to experience the surprise speed of 5G, the performance-to-price ratio of these phones is still relatively low, and the coverage of LPDDR5 is also insufficient. Therefore, at present, the mainstream scheme in the market is LPDDR4 / 4x.
