DAG is a group of up to 16 Mailbox servers that use components of Windows failover clustering and continuous replication to provide a high availability solution for mailbox databases. After you form a DAG and add Mailbox servers as members, you can assign passive copies of mailbox databases to those member Mailbox servers.

Requirements and recommendations that should be followed for DAG configuration:

Mailbox servers that are members of the same DAG must be in the same domain

DAG members cannot be domain controllers (and Microsoft does not recommend installing exchange on top of domain controllers)

DAG name is less than 15 characters

You can add different versions of exchange server to the same DAG, for example, exchange 2013 Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition.

At least one network adapter can communicate with DAG members

All DAG members should have the same number of network adapters.

If multiple adapters are used on the Mailbox server, each network adapter must be on a different network subnet.

Round trip delay between DAG members should not exceed 500ms

Mailbox servers that are members of DAG should not be used as file sharing witnesses

Before adding Mailbox servers to DAG, make sure that all Mailbox servers are {running the same version of Windows}. A Mailbox server running Windows 2008 R2 cannot be added to the DAG of a Mailbox server that is already running Windows 2012.

{when deploying a database availability group (DAG) using a mailbox server that is running Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2, you must pre-hold and set up CNO (Cluster name object) unless you are deploying DAG without cluster management access points.
