This scheme has been formally approved and issued by IEEE Registration Authority (IEEE Registration Authority) authorized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/IEC), and the Ethernet type field for WAPI agreement has been assigned, which is the only approved agreement in China in this field.

WAPI is also a security mechanism in the mandatory standard of wireless local area network in China.

Different from the one-way encryption authentication of WIFI, WAPI authenticates both ways to ensure the security of transmission. The WAPI security system adopts public key cryptography technology, and the authentication server AS is responsible for the issuance, verification and revocation of certificates. The public key certificates issued by AS are installed on the wireless client and wireless access point AP as their own digital identity certificates. When a wireless client logs in to the wireless access point AP, both parties must be authenticated by the authentication server AS before accessing the network. According to the results of the verification, only the mobile terminal with the legal certificate can access the wireless access point AP with the legal certificate.

The Wireless LAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI) system consists of the following parts:

1. WAI authentication and key management

2. WPI data transmission protection

The wireless local area network security infrastructure (WPI) encrypts and decrypts the MPDU of the MAC sub-layer, which is respectively used for the digital certificate, key negotiation and transmission data encryption and decryption of the WLAN device, so as to realize the identity authentication, link authentication, access control and encryption protection of user information in the wireless transmission state.
