Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
According to foreign media Tom's hardware,Ubuntu developer Canonical announced earlier that Ubuntu 19.10 will no longer update 32-bit software packages and applications, causing the dissatisfaction of many application developers.
Now, Ubuntu has announced that Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 will support selected 32-bit applications, rather than one size fits all.
Ubuntu developer Steve Langasek said in an announcement on Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan Ermine) released on June 18th that Ubuntu confirmed that it would no longer support traditional 32-bit but only 64-bit from the 19.10 version in the second half of this year.
For many years, it has been an inevitable pain point for Linux users to play games. Ubuntu has also introduced support for many games because of its broad mass base, but they are all based on 32-bit applications. If Ubuntu moves into the 64-bit era, they will not be able to play. Pierre-Loup Griffais, the developer of Valve, also announced that Ubuntu 19.10 and later 64-bit versions will not be officially supported by Steam and will not be recommended to players. Steam will continue to find ways to reduce the impact on Ubuntu's existing players and will shift its focus to other Linux distributions, but the exact version has not yet been determined.
In response, Canonical said it would work with selected 32-bit application developers to ensure that these applications continue to run on Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04. However, these applications may only work in more stringent environments and requirements, such as running in Ubuntu compatibility containers, which may not appease Steam and other developers, such as the Wine aspect.
If you are a Ubuntu user and use Steam for gaming, it is recommended that you stay at Ubuntu version 19.04 and not upgrade, or wait for official support for other distributions.
Ubuntu is not the only operating system that wants to cancel 32-bit support, and many systems signal in some way that 32-bit support will end in the near future. Apple announced last year that Mojave will be the last version of macOS to support 32-bit applications. The next version of macOS,Catalina will only support 64-bit applications.
Google has told developers that from August 1, 2019, they need to have a 64-bit version of the app in the Google Play Store, or their application will be rejected. Once everyone has a 64-bit version of the app, Google may soon announce that the Google Play Store will end support for 32-bit apps. The company will also stop providing the 32-bit version of the Android simulator after June 30. On December 31, Google will stop updating 32-bit Android Studio 3.6s.
