I. Preface
Maybe you have done a lot of AC configuration when you come into contact with wireless projects, or some can match it with your eyes closed, because the general wireless project configuration will not be too difficult and complicated. However, for wireless bridging, people may not be exposed to many opportunities. Now let's talk about wireless bridging. Generally, wireless bridging technology will be used in some occasions where wiring is not suitable or difficult, such as wireless coverage in elevators, wireless coverage between adjacent buildings, open outdoor wireless coverage and so on. In a wireless coverage project of a Marriott hotel in Shenzhen, I encountered a situation where the hotel needs to cover the wireless signal in the elevator. Generally speaking, if you want to cover the wireless signal in the elevator, there are two options. One is to install the wireless AP or feeder at the top of the elevator shaft. The advantage of this scheme is that the installation difficulty is small, but the disadvantage is that the wireless signal is weak and unstable. Another scheme is to do wireless bridging in the elevator shaft. The advantage of this scheme is that the wireless signal in the elevator car is strong and stable. The disadvantage is that the installation is troublesome and the configuration is relatively complex. In this project, I choose to use wireless bridging scheme to achieve wireless signal coverage of hotel elevators, using Ruckus7731 bridging equipment.
Before we talk about Ruckus wireless bridging, let's take a look at Ruckus7731. The Ruckus ZoneFlex 7731 is the first centrally managed outdoor point-to-point and point-to-multipoint bridge that takes full advantage of 5GHz 802.11n and provides unparalleled throughput. Exceeding the backhaul throughput of 100Mbps provides more opportunities for new business models while bridging remote locations in an economical way to provide broadband services to previously unreachable locations. ZoneFlex 7731 can be managed through its own WebGUI system or centrally managed by Ruckus FlexMaster, providing a complete view of the entire wireless network, including ZoneDirector, as well as other indoor and outdoor ZoneFlex access points.
II. Introduction of wireless bridging scheme
Next we will describe in detail the Ruckus7731 wireless bridging scheme. As the name implies, the wireless bridge abandons the traditional copper wire and optical fiber and uses electromagnetic waves as the transmission medium for network data transmission to achieve the purpose of connecting different network segments. Because it is not convenient to lay the network cable in the elevator shaft, we use the electromagnetic wave as the network cable by the way of wireless bridge. The specific network structure is shown in the following figure.
Wireless bridging devices An and B are respectively installed on the top of the elevator shaft and the top of the elevator car (device A represents the wireless bridging device on the top of the elevator shaft, and device B represents the wireless bridging device on the elevator car). Device An is connected to the POE switch of the floor IDF through a common network cable, and device B is connected to the wireless AP in the car through the network cable, both of which are powered by the elevator car power equipment. The wireless AP device is adopted by AC through a transmission medium between devices An and B.
3. Configuration of Ruckus7731 3.1 non-root bridge configuration
It is recommended to configure the non-root bridge device first, because if the root bridge device is configured first and the default management VLAN and management IP are modified, when the non-root bridge device is connected to the root bridge by wireless signal after the first restart, it may result in unable to log in to the non-root bridge device to set the desired management VLAN and IP address.
First configure the PC network card address as 192.168.2.X 255.255.255.0
PC is directly connected to the non-POE port of the non-root bridge device. Enter https://192.168.2.1 in the browser to see the following interface: select non-root bridge and click next.

Configure SSID and connection password
After the device is restarted, the non-root bridge address is 192.168.2.254, and the default user name is super password: sp-admin. After logging in, click Configuration → Bridge to modify the management VLAN and IP addresses we need, and click upgrade configuration.
3.2 Root Bridge configuration
Configure the switch to connect port access vlan-1 to PC and root bridge 7731.
The default address of Ruckus 7731 is 192.168.2.1. Enter https://192.168.2.1 in the browser to see the following interface to select the root bridge and click next.

The configuration as shown in the picture can also be changed according to the actual situation. The main reason is that the SSID and password should be consistent with the non-root bridge. Click next to restart the device after configuration.
After the device restarts, the root bridge address is 192.168.2.1, and the default user name is super password: sp-admin. After logging in, click Configuration → Bridge to modify the management VLAN and IP addresses we need, and click upgrade configuration.
After saving the configuration, modify the port of the switch to connect the root bridge device to Trunk port, native VLAN is 100 (assuming AP adopts VLAN as VLAN100), open VLAN800 and 1000 (assuming 7731 management VLAN is VLAN800, data VLAN is VLAN1000), and connect PC port access VLAN-800.
After modifying the switch configuration, you can see the message after logging in by typing https://172.31.14.221, in the PC browser.
Finally, the wireless AP device is connected to the non-POE port of the non-root bridge device.
OK, now we can adopt AP happily!
