This article introduces how to set up SNMP in SUSE LINUX. The content is very detailed. Interested friends can use it for reference. I hope it will be helpful to you.
Configure SNMP agents on systems running supported SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating systems
Server Administrator uses SNMP services provided by ucd-snmp or net-snmp agents. The SNMP agent can be configured to enable SNMP access from remote hosts, change the community name, enable Set operations, and send traps to Management Station. To configure the SNMP agent to interact correctly with management applications such as IT Assistant, perform the steps described in the following sections.
Note: in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (version 9), the SNMP agent configuration file is located in / etc/snmpd.conf. In SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (version 10), the SNMP agent configuration file is located in / etc/snmp/snmpd.conf.
Note: for additional details on SNMP configuration, refer to your operating system documentation.
Sever Administrator SNMP installation operation
Server Administrator SNMP uses the SNMP Multiplexing (SMUX) protocol to communicate with the SNMP agent. When Server Administrator SNMP connects to the SNMP proxy, it sends an object identifier to the SNMP proxy to mark it as the SMUX sibling. The object identifier must be configured with the SNMP agent, so if it does not exist, Server Administrator adds the following lines to the SNMP agent profile (/ etc/snmpd.conf or / etc/snmp/snmpd.conf) during installation:
Smuxpeer .1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.1
Enable SNMP access from a remote host
The default SNMP agent configuration in the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system only gives the "public" community read-only access to the entire MIB tree from the local host. This configuration does not allow SNMP management applications, such as IT Assistant running on other hosts, to discover and manage Server Administrator systems correctly. If Server Administrator detects this configuration during installation, it logs messages to the operating system log file / var/log/messages to indicate that SNMP access is limited to the local host. If you plan to use the SNMP management application to manage the system from a remote host, you must configure the SNMP agent to enable SNMP access from the remote host.
Note: for security reasons, it is recommended that SNMP access be limited to specific remote hosts where possible.
To enable SNMP access from a specific remote host to the system running Server Administrator, edit the SNMP agent configuration file / etc/snmpd.conf or / etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and perform the following steps:
Look for the following lines:
Rocommunity public 127.0.0.1
Edit or copy the line to replace 127.0.0.1 with the remote host IP address. After editing, the new line should be:
Rocommunity public IP_address
Note: SNMP access can be enabled from multiple specific remote hosts by adding rocommunity directives from each remote host.
To enable the changed SNMP configuration, restart the SNMP agent by typing:
/ etc/init.d/snmpd restart
To enable SNMP access from all remote hosts to the system running Server Administrator, edit the SNMP agent configuration file / etc/snmpd.conf or / etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and perform the following steps:
Look for the following lines:
Rocommunity public 127.0.0.1
Edit this line by deleting 127.0.0.1. After editing, the new line should be:
Rocommunity public
To enable the changed SNMP configuration, restart the SNMP agent by typing:
/ etc/init.d/snmpd restart
Change the SNMP community name
Configure the SNMP community name to determine which Management Station can manage your system through SNMP. The SNMP community name used by the management application must match the SNMP community name configured on the Server Administrator system so that the management application can retrieve management information from the Server Administrator.
To change the default SNMP community name used to retrieve management information from the system running Server Administrator, edit the SNMP agent configuration file / etc/snmpd.conf or / etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and perform the following steps:
Look for the following lines:
Rocommunity public 127.0.0.1
Edit this line to replace public with the new SNMP community name. After editing, the new line should be:
Rocommunity community_name 127.0.0.1
To enable the changed SNMP configuration, restart the SNMP agent by typing:
/ etc/init.d/snmpd restart
Enable SNMP setting operation
In order to change the Server Administrator property using IT Assistant, the SNMP setting operation must be enabled on the system running Server Administrator. To shut down the system remotely from IT Assistant, the SNMP Set operation must be enabled.
Note: rebooting the system to change the management function does not require a SNMP Set operation.
To enable the SNMP setup operation on the system running Server Administrator, edit the SNMP agent configuration file / etc/snmpd.conf or / etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and perform the following steps:
Look for the following lines:
Rocommunity public 127.0.0.1
Edit this line to replace rocommunity with rwcommunity. After editing, the new line should be:
Rwcommunity public 127.0.0.1
To enable the changed SNMP configuration, restart the SNMP agent by typing:
/ etc/init.d/snmpd restart
Configure your system to send traps to the management station
Server Administrator generates SNMP traps in response to changes in sensor conditions and other monitored parameters. You must configure one or more trap destinations for SNMP traps that will be sent to the management station on the system running Server Administrator.
To configure the system running Server Administrator to send traps to the management station, edit the SNMP agent configuration file / etc/snmpd.conf or / etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and perform the following steps:
Add the following command line to the file:
Trapsink IP_address community_name
Where IP_address is the IP address of Management Station and community_name is the name of the SNMP community.
To enable the changed SNMP configuration, restart the SNMP agent by typing:
/ etc/init.d/snmpd restart
