Leica has released a new SL2, the latest version of its full-frame mirrorless camera system. The new SL2 is SL's successor since 2015, introducing higher-resolution sensors, an upgraded structure, a new touchscreen and an upgraded electronic viewfinder. It will go on sale on Nov. 21 at a price of $5995.

Although there are some minor changes, anyone who has seen SL will be familiar with SL2's design. Now the middle chassis is made of magnesium, the top and bottom are made of aluminum, and the entire middle part is covered with artificial leather. The dustproof and waterproof grade of SL2 reaches IP54, and the control scheme matching Q2, M10 and CL is updated on the back.

The back is equipped with a new 3.2in, 2.1 million pixel touch screen and a 5.76 million pixel OLED electronic viewfinder. Between the new touchscreen and the control system, SL2 provides three ways to interact with the menu system: touch, joystick, or finger wheel. It also has many customizable buttons that can be programmed to any function you like. The whole system feels more modern than the non-touch LCD screen on the SL.

SL2's new 47.3 million pixel sensor is installed on the new 5-axis image stabilization system.

Internally, the SL2 has the same 47.3 million-pixel full-frame sensor as Q2, which can be used with an interchangeable lens system with a little modification. The sensor has been connected to the new 5-axis body anti-shake (IBIS) system, providing up to 5.5 levels of anti-shake, enabling Leica to catch up with Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and Canon's IBIS systems. Cameras for years. The sensor supports ISO settings from 50 to 50000 and can capture up to 14 dynamic range apertures.

The SL2 is run by Leica's Maestro III image processor, and its mechanical shutter can shoot 10 frames per second, while its electronic shutter can shoot 20 frames per second. It can capture 4K video with a full width image sensor up to 60p and 5K cropped video with 30p. SL2 can also shoot 1080p video at 180 frames per second, achieving a slow-motion effect.

The new AF system can switch between eye, face and body tests.

The new contrast detection autofocus system includes eye, face and body detection functions, which automatically switch photos only when focus is locked (priority focus), but only allow you to take as many photos as possible depending on the situation. Focus or non-focus (shutter priority).

The SL2 is about the same size and weight as the SL (928g), but that doesn't mean it's compact and mirrorless, as you might expect from Sony or Fuji Film. This is a bulky camera that doesn't care about compactness because it provides a good ergonomic experience. If you are considering scaling down from DLSR to a smaller mirrorless system, SL2 may not be on your list.

In addition to the new features brought by high-resolution sensors and IBIS systems, perhaps the biggest change in SL2 is SL2's new menu system. The new Quick setup screen provides access to common controls, while the new movie mode (which takes effect when shooting video) switches the camera to video-specific settings such as ASA, aperture, and shutter angle.

Since the launch of the SL four years ago, Leica's SL card lens system has been developed and now includes eight zoom lenses and five fixed-focus lenses, a total of eight. The other three shots are scheduled for release next year, and Leica's partnership with Panasonic and Shima's L-Mount Alliance has led to the release of many other SL2-compatible shots. All lenses, including manually focused Leica lenses with adapters, will benefit from the camera's new IBIS system, allowing clearer images at longer shutter speeds.

Before the official release, I filmed it for a few days with Leica SL2 and 50mm fplash 1.4 summirux footage. Although SL2 feels very similar to SL, the new viewfinder and improved performance are immediately eye-catching and appreciated. In particular, the organic light-emitting diode viewfinder has the advantages of wide field of vision, fast refresh rate and clear resolution. Similarly, the camera's new autofocus system does an excellent job of locking portraits even when there is not enough light. There is no doubt that a 50 mm Summilux helps with this performance. It is the absolute beast of the fixed-focus lens and will be at the top of my shortlist of desert island lenses.

Of course, you can get similar performance and resolution from much cheaper cameras made by Sony, Nikon, Canon or Panasonic. You may think that the reason for SL2 has a lot to do with its feeling and shooting experience. SL2 is a brick of the camera. Although it is expensive, it will definitely feel like part of a professional tool. It is also flexible enough to be used in a variety of photography situations, whether in studios, weddings or portraits.
