Hybrid mode, known as Promiscuous Mode in English, means that a machine can receive all the data streams passing through it, regardless of whether the destination address contained in the data flow is its own, this mode corresponds to the non-promiscuous mode. In non-promiscuous mode, the network adapter listens only for traffic on its own MAC address. In promiscuous mode, it can listen for all packets. By default, the network adapter is set to non-promiscuous mode. Hybrid mode is a security policy in the data link layer (L2).

A network card in hybrid mode can receive all data streams passing through it, regardless of the format and address (any packet transmitted in the same collision domain). After receiving the packet, it is up to the network layer to determine how to deal with the packet, such as whether to submit it to the upper layer for processing or to the lower layer for forwarding or discarding. In the non-hybrid mode, the network card only passes the packets sent to itself (including broadcast packets) to the upper layer, and all other packets are discarded.

To take a simple example, three computers, C1, c2 and c3, are connected to a switch. it is impossible for C1 to send packets to c2 in non-hybrid mode, but c3 can receive packets from C1 to c2 in hybrid mode. In this case, c3 is a network eavesdropper (eavesdropper), and this kind of eavesdropping C1 and c2 will not be detected. Therefore, some people call hybrid mode monitoring mode.
