Jenkins X New logo

Jenkins X launches new logo

As early as March 2018, the Jenkins X project suddenly appeared as the Jenkins counterpart of Kubernetes Automation CI/CD. As part of this release, its logo is a variant of Jenkins logo, a captain with a pipe and a Kubernetes logo on his hat.

In software, we like to say that naming is difficult-because it is. Another equally difficult thing is trying to capture the nature of the project in logo. Logo has many meanings in a small space. Icon, such as Jenkins logo, has strong emotional relationships with many developers. So, with this in mind, we always listen closely to feedback about the new logo and what people think of the project.

Why should we change logo?

We hear a lot of positive things when listening to feedback from different sources, but we also highlight some problems and confusion.

Not everyone likes the logo, and we've heard a lot of feedback about what people don't like about it, with "smoking a pipe" at the top of the list.

Confusion with the Jenkins project-- we also see this logo more consistent with other Jenkins mascots, which leads to confusion about what type of project Jenkins X is-- some people think it's another plug-in in the ecosystem.

We have also heard that using Kubernetes logo is confusing or may not be entirely within the scope of Kubernetes logo guidelines.

From a practical point of view, we have also heard that this logo is too detailed to be a good icon, especially a favicon. It is regarded as the mascot rather than the logo.

With the establishment of the continuous delivery Foundation, Jenkins X is one of the foundation's founding projects, and unlike Jenkins, we feel it is time to deal with this feedback. So we really went back to the drawing board and thought about what kind of logo would better represent Jenkins X as a project. We considered what we wanted people to associate with the project: open source, continuous delivery, speed, automation, stability, teams, and so on. We also want a logo that can improve representativeness, so we want to avoid a human-based logo that may inadvertently encode gender, age, and other factors. In addition, "X" has become a unique part of the project logo, so we want to really emphasize it in the new logo.

Design new logo and community feedback

In the end, we focused on trying to visualize speed and automation, which led to the idea of robots. However, we still want to pay homage to the original Jenkins project in logo in some way. We have clearly decided not to adhere to the nautical themes traditionally related to Kubernetes and related projects. We went through several iterations to refine and reduce the details. The design work works closely with Craig Ross, the creative director of the Linux Foundation, and his team, who have also produced the continuous delivery Foundation, CNCF,Network Service Mesh and Tekton brands.

After the core Jenkins X team identified the design they were satisfied with, we brought it to the community to get feedback and resolve some details. We have a lot of feedback, including everything it reminds people of (an upside down koala, Bill Nye,Reddit logo,Flash Gordon,Tekton logo, etc.). The original design had a consistent theme that it did not reflect the friendliness of the community. Kyounger specifically helped analyze this feedback and redoubled its efforts to come up with a solution. We agreed and liked this suggestion and fed it back to the final version of logo. Thank you very much for Kenny and open source FTW!

Jenkins and Jenkins X

Jenkins X was originally a Jenkins sub-project and is now a stand-alone project of the continuous delivery Foundation (CDF). The bow tie in the new logo is a constant reminder of its provenance. Although our logo and brand may change, under the aegis of CDF, we will continue to work closely with Jenkins projects to share the same spirit of service for developers' CI/CD and productivity needs.

Launch of a new logo

We have now started to switch to the new logo and look forward to seeing some new swag available soon. We will now use the old logo as the mascot of the Jenkins X project. If you want to update the logo you use, the new artwork is here.
