Suppose you have a domain name called sub.domain.com that contains an AD controller named West-AD01. FQDN will be West-AD01.sub.domain.ntst.com, assuming we need to change the domain controller name to East-AD01. Here are the steps:

1) Open powershell as an administrator and run:

Netdom computername West-AD01.sub.domain.com / add:East-AD01.sub.domain.com

2) run in the same PS window:

Netdom computername West-AD01.sub.domain.com / makeprimary:East-AD01.sub.domain.com

DC will be restarted at this point.

3) Open the PowerShell window as admin and run:

Netdom computername East-AD01.sub.domain.com / remove:West-AD01.sub.domain.com
