Android 12 has finally added native support for scrolling screenshots, allowing users to take complete screenshots of web pages and documents. This feature is even better with Android 12L.

Of course, Android 12 is not the first to introduce scrolling screenshots; for years, this feature has been an integral part of other OEM skins such as MIUI and ColorOS. However, Google's scrolling screenshot implementation is different from other skins in that it is based on views rather than image stitching. This view-based implementation has its advantages over image mosaic technology, that is, in terms of speed and reliability. But this approach also reduces its versatility because it may not work with applications that do not have a view-based UI. In addition, it does not apply to WebViews, a system component that allows developers to display web pages in their applications. Fortunately, Android 12L solves this problem.

As Esper's Mishaal Rahman discovered, Android 12L adds scrolling capture support for WebViews. This means that you can now take full-page screenshots of what is displayed in WebView. As you can see in the screenshot below, when you open the link in WebView, Android 12L now displays a "capture more" button at the bottom so that you can scroll through the screenshot. This option does not appear on devices running Android 12.

An example of WebView is when Twitter opens an external link (that is, a web page) in a browser window. WebView is basically an embedded browser that applications can use to load web pages.

The Android 12L has been launched to the Google Pixel 3a series, Pixel 4 series and Pixel 5 series. Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be updated later this month. The latest version brings a number of UI improvements and features to large-screen devices such as foldable devices and tablets, including two-column layout of notification bar and lock screen, activity embedding, improved multitasking experience, and so on.
