How to use SQL to query views, Postico uses skills to share ~

You can execute custom database queries from the SQL query view in Postico. You can enter the SQL query view by clicking SQL query in the sidebar. There is also a keyboard shortcut (⇧⌘ T) to navigate to the query view.

Execute SQL statement

The query view highlights the current statement in light gray. Use the command execute query on the connection menu, or press ⌘↩︎ to execute the current statement (or the current selection, if any). The corresponding results are displayed below the text view.

You can execute more than one statement at a time by selecting them. They will be executed in an implicit transaction, so if one of the statements fails, all changes to the database will be rolled back.

When you execute multiple statements, Postico displays the first result. You can switch between results using the pop-up menu button at the lower left.

Use the command execute all queries on the connection menu or use ⌥⌘↩︎ to execute all statements at once.

To clear the results area, use the clear results command on the connection menu or press ⌘ K.

Automatic completion

There are two autocomplete modes in the SQL query view.

Tab completion: press the Tab key and Postico will automatically try to complete the words you type. You will hear a beep when there may be multiple completions. Press Tab again to display a list of possible completions in a pop-up window. We are trying to make the behavior similar to tab completion in command-line tools such as psql and bash.

Show completion: press Ctrl- Spacebar or ESC,Postico to display a list of all possible patches in the pop-up window, including other matches related to the words you type. If there are no words, you can even use this mode (for example, you try to "complete" the white space character). You can also use the Show completion command on the Edit menu to trigger autocompletion.

In the autocomplete window, use the arrow keys to select finish, and then press the return key to confirm.

Multiple matches of the same recommendation are grouped by type, using the left and right arrow keys to expand and collapse the grouping proposal.

Indent

You can indent multiple selected rows at a time.

Use the command move right from the Edit menu, or press ⇥ or ⌘] to move the selected line to the right (increase indentation).

Use the command move left from the Edit menu, or press ⇧⇥ or ⌘ [to move the selected line to the left (reduce indentation).
