Today, I will talk to you about how to analyze the SAP data center. Many people may not know much about it. In order to make you understand better, the editor has summarized the following contents for you. I hope you can get something from this article.
Jerry's previous article on enterprise digital transformation and SAP cloud platform introduces the important position and role of SAP cloud platform in enterprise digital transformation. As a platform as a service (PaaS) solution, the SAP cloud platform implements a high degree of virtualization, including the virtualization of CPU computing resources, storage, network and database entities, so that users can use a variety of resources on demand. However, from an implementation point of view, these virtualization resources still need to run on physical servers. The geographic location of these physical servers is called the data center in the field of cloud computing.
There is a link on the SAP website devoted to SAP's data center strategy.
The following is a map of the global distribution of SAP data centers on the SAP website as of June 20, 2018.
These data centers in the figure correspond to the list content we saw in the Regions tab of SAP cloud platform Cockpit.
We use Cloud Service Level Agreement (Service level Agreement) to measure the high availability of cloud services. For example, if the SLA of a cloud service is 99.99%, it means that the monthly failure time of the service can only account for 0.001% of the total time, that is, a little more than 4 minutes, or equivalent to an annual calculation, that is, the service cannot be offline for more than 50 minutes each year.
In order to ensure the high availability of cloud services, uninterrupted power supply and good hardware cooling devices have become indispensable facilities in the data center. The data center connects two separate power grid systems operated by local utilities. If one of the systems fails, the other continues to supply power. Each data center is equipped with 13 diesel generators (Diesel generators pictured above), with a total capacity of 29 megawatts, ensuring power supply to the data center in case of emergency. The local power supply company and diesel generators provide power of 20 kilovolts, which is converted from the transformer (Transformers) pictured above to 380 volts. In addition, the battery pack in the data center can provide 15 minutes of power supply for emergency power supply during the time window from the power failure to the start of the diesel generator. The maximum charging capacity of the battery pack is checked periodically and replaced if it is significantly reduced.
The heat generated by high-performance servers is quite amazing, so heat dissipation has become an eternal topic in the data center. The placement of cabinets and racks in the data center computer room is very fastidious, and there is even a set of international standards, the code name of these standards usually begins with ANSI/TIA, the full name is American National Standard Institute/Telecommunications Industry Association. The ANSI/TIA/EIA-606-A standard, for example, stipulates that two letters or Arabic numerals must be used in the data room to mark each side of the 600mm overhead floor.
The ANSI/TIA/EIA standard provides the following for the front, back, and height of the cabinet / rack column:
The back spacing of the cabinet / rack column needs to be at least 0.6 meters (2 feet) apart, and 1 meter (3 feet) is recommended.
The maximum allowable height for the cabinet / rack is 2.4 meters (8 feet), and the recommended maximum height is 2.1 meters (7 feet).
The front spacing of the cabinet / rack column is at least 1 meter (3 feet), and 1.2 meters (4 feet) is recommended if deeper equipment is placed in the rack / cabinet.
Look at some physical pictures found online:
Going back to the layout and component composition diagram of the SAP data center in St.Leon-Rot, Germany, the three components in the following figure are related to heat dissipation:
Cooling water
Turbo-cooling
Heat exchanger
The cooling unit itself also needs to dissipate heat. The Rot data center has 18 heat exchangers (heat exchangers) that drain the heat generated by the cooling units to the outside world. In summer, when the external room temperature is higher than 26 degrees Celsius, the heat exchange device will also use water-cooled heat dissipation to achieve a better heat dissipation effect through water evaporation. The Rot data center is equipped with a dedicated water supply plant to ensure the summer water supply for heat exchange units, while Rot's local municipal water supply system also reserves some water supply quotas as a backup for Rot's exclusive water supply plant.
I hope the following 3D diagram will give you a more intuitive understanding of the internal composition of the data center.
Security of SAP data Center
Security of physical sites in the data center: the SAP data center is under continuous monitoring for 7 × 24 hours. The so-called trap room (Man trap Room) ensures that only legitimate personnel can enter a security control area. Programmers can compare the trap room to the necessary permission checks before performing business logic in the code. In essence, it is a small room before entering a security control area, a deliberate "trap". This "trap" allows the data center security system to perform security authentication for visitors and triggers an alarm if an unauthorized entry attempt is found. Entering the area with high security requirements needs to be authenticated by biometric scanning.
Back in 2014, SAP announced that its data center uses 100% renewable energy.
