According to the updated support page (via New York Post), WhatsApp made a so-called "tough decision" to quickly remove millions of users from the messaging app. The page states that from February 1, 2020, users running devices running iOS 8 or earlier will not be able to use the application. Currently, unless the equipment used is equipped with iOS 9 or later, a new WhatsApp account cannot be opened and users cannot re-authenticate existing accounts. The WhatsApp support page states, "for the best experience, we recommend that you use the latest version of iOS on your phone. Users of Android devices running version 2.3.7 (Gingerbread) or later can no longer open new WhatsApp accounts or reverify existing accounts. From February 1, 2020, Android users must install Android 4.0 ice cream sandwiches to use WhatsApp. For Windows Phone users, WhatsApp will no longer be used for all versions of OS after December 31, 2019.
