Twitter is blocking its plans to delete inactive accounts. After hinting that we were considering ways to commemorate deceased users, the social network announced that it would not delete any unused accounts unless there was a way to commemorate deceased users. It also said that the eventual cancellation would only have a "temporary" impact because of privacy regulations such as GDPR.

The company said it might "expand" the scope of its idle policy to comply with regulations in other areas, but promised to inform users if it did so.

Twitter's action is likely to allay concerns that the company may delete the accounts of deceased users, erasing years of precious memories. Our colleague at TechCrunch, Drew Olanoff, pointed out that he sometimes revisited his late father's tweets in memory of him, but did not have login details. If Twitter deletes this account, Orannov will actually lose contact with the past.

There is a good reason to clean up old accounts. People who simply gave up Twitter a few years ago may not worry about losing their posts. However, Twitter is clear that it needs to be more cautious if it is not to infuriate users who are already worried about its content extraction methods.
