Sony announced the launch of two new APS-C mirrorless cameras: the flagship A6600 and the low-end A6100. The A6600 has many high-end features, making it the successor to the A6500 launched in October 2016.

Like the A6500, the new A6600 has a 5-axis internal image stabilization, a 242000-pixel APS-C Exmor CMOS image sensor and ultra-fast autofocus (AF), and can find its subject in 0.02 seconds. It also has real-time AF tracking and a new real-time eye AF tracking, which first appeared on the A6400. We evaluated it earlier this year. Sony added a 3.5mm headphone Jack, the first of its alpha series of cameras.

The A6600 claims the longest battery life of all APS-C mirrorless cameras. Sony says this is thanks to its Z battery pack, which should last twice as long as the A6500. In short, this should reach about 720 times before it needs to be replaced.

Sony also said its new BIONZ X image processing system borrows the A9 and A7 cameras, which is 1.8 times faster than the A6500.

Sony's other new model, the A6100, like most other APS-C cameras, relies on in-lens stability and does not provide BIONZ X image processing, but it does provide the same fast AF and real-time eye AF tracking technology as the A6600's still photos (though not suitable for movie recording) and 24.2MP sensors.

Both cameras will be released later this year. The A6100 will go on sale in October and the American body will cost $750. Sony will launch a 16-50mm electric lens at a price of $1100.

The A6600 will go on sale in November and the fuselage will cost $1400 in the United States. Sony is introducing an 18mm-135mm E-mount lens for $1800.

Sony also released two lightweight E-mount lenses later this year, which are compatible with these cameras and other APS-C cameras: the E 16-55mm will sell for $1400 when it launches in October. The variable fLean 4.5-6.3 E70-355mm will follow $1000 in November.
