What is CentOS?

CentOS (Community Enterprise Operating System) is a community-supported clone Linux distribution that is born out of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and compatible with it, so we can think of CentOS as a free version of RHEL. Each release of CentOS has a 10-year maintenance period, and each new release has a 2-year release cycle. On January 8, 2014, CentOS announced that it had officially joined Red Hat and was managed by the new CentOS board of directors, but remained independent from RHEL.

History and release of CentOS

CentOS was released in 2004, when it was called cAOs Linux;, a set of RPM-based distributions maintained and managed by the community.

CentOS combines many aspects, including Debian, Red Hat Linux/Fedora, and FreeBSD, to enable servers and clusters to work steadily for 3 to 5 years. It has a group of open source software developers as supporters and is part of a large organization (the CAOS Foundation).

In June 2006, David Parsley announced that the TAO Linux (another cloned version of RHEL) developed by him had retired from history and turned to CentOS development. However, his domain shift does not affect previous TAO users because they can update the system to migrate to CentOS by using yum update.

In January 2014, Red Hat began sponsoring the CentOS project and handed over ownership and trademarks.

CentOS design

To be exact, CentOS is a clone of the paid RHEL (Red Had Enterprise Edition) version. RHEL provides the source code for subsequent CentOS modifications and changes (removal of trademarks and logo) and refinement into the final product.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a Debian-based Linux operating system used in desktops, servers, smartphones, tablets and other fields. Ubuntu was developed by a British named Canonical Ltd. Issued by a company founded and sponsored by Mark Shuttleworth of South Africa.

The design of Ubuntu

Ubuntu is an open source distribution generated by the joint efforts of developers around the world. After years of careful management, the interface of Ubuntu has become more and more modern and user-friendly, the whole system runs more smoothly and safely, and there are thousands of applications available for download.

Because it is based on Debian, it also supports .deb packages, newer package systems, and the more secure snap package format (snappy).

This new packaging system allows distributed applications to come with their own dependencies to meet the needs.

The difference between CentOS and Ubuntu

Ubuntu is based on Debian,CentOS and RHEL.

Ubuntu uses .deb and .snap packages, and CentOS uses .rpm and flatpak packages.

Ubuntu uses apt to update, and CentOS uses yum

CentOS looks more stable because it doesn't make regular updates to packages like Ubuntu does, but that doesn't mean Ubuntu is less secure than CentOS.

Ubuntu has more documentation and free questions and information support

The Ubuntu server version has more support for cloud services and container deployment.
