Overlay is a concept of network overlay-the physical network is called Underlay Network, on which an Overlay Network is built to host the business of virtual machines. Logically, communication between virtual machines in the Overlay Network looks like a layer 2 network, regardless of whether the Underlay Network routes the network across layer 3 and across physical sites. At the Underlay level, different data centers are interconnected through direct connect; at the Overlay level, interconnection is achieved through tunnel technology (vxlan, GRE) or × ×.

Network virtualization

With network virtualization technology, a complete set of network services (such as switching, routing, access control, firewall, QoS, and load balancing) can be reproduced in software equivalent to the network hypervisor. Therefore, these services can be programmatically combined in any way, and a unique independent virtual network can be generated in just a few seconds.
