The first developer preview of Android 13 has just been released, and it provides some interesting hints about Google's focus on this year's major mobile operating system update. New features include upgraded theme options and privacy features, new language controls, and, of course, a large number of back-end updates. These early previews are aimed at developers, not end users, so it's best to postpone the upgrade until the software is in a better state.

After Android 12 focuses on Material You customizable themes, Android 13 is extending dynamic application icons to all applications, not just Google. As long as the application developer provides a compatible monochrome application icon, the theme icon feature allows the application icon to appear in a tone that complements your wallpaper. The feature first appeared on Pixel devices, but Google says it is working with other manufacturers to release it more widely.

There are also some adjustments to the way Android handles permissions and security. A new photo selector will allow users to share photos and videos with a single application that can view all photos on your device without permission. Google plans to eventually introduce this feature to all phones running Android 11 and later.

Of course, this new developer preview still has a lot of work to do, which may not be obvious in daily use. For example, the new Wi-Fi permissions will allow applications to discover and connect to Wi-Fi points without location permissions, and language preferences can now be set on a per-application basis (convenient for multilingual users). Google also said it would continue to invest in its Project Mainline program to provide more updates through Google Play rather than at the operating system level.

Google said it plans to release a developer preview of Android 13 in February and March and transition to a beta version around April. It expects Android 13 to stabilize around June or July before its official release later this year. Hopefully this year's update will go more smoothly than Android 12, which has stability issues on many devices.
