After Huawei, it is DJI's turn.
The Trump administration is preparing to issue an executive order banning federal departments and agencies from buying and using foreign-made drones, foreign media Techcrunch reported.
The reason is the same as banning many Chinese companies (Huawei, Haikang, etc.): fear that the information collected by drones will be transferred to other countries, endangering national security.
And related to drones, DJI is bound to bear the brunt.
The executive order highlighted the threat posed by China, and a spokesman for DJI immediately responded that the order was another attack on its drone technology, Techcrunch reported.
This is not the first time that the US government has targeted DJI, and it is not just DJI that has been affected. Prior to this, several departments of the US military have banned or grounded Chinese-made drones.
Under a series of bans, DJI has been seeking various measures to avoid the impact.
In June 2019, DJI announced the opening of a production line in California to assemble new models of drones that are popular among US federal and local government agencies, and made it clear that the drones could only read data from the machines after landing and could not transmit any information over wireless networks.
In spite of this, the ban on the United States has been tightened. In January this year, the US Department of Internal Affairs issued an executive order banning the use of nearly 800 foreign-made drones purchased by the department in non-emergency situations, of which 121 were from DJI, 665 were made in China but not from DJI, and 24 were made in the United States, but the parts and components came from China.
According to Techcrunch, the chief information officer of the US Department of Internal Affairs emailed senior staff in July 2019, saying that they were aware of the risks of foreign-made drones and had taken appropriate measures. The only more effective mitigation, he says, is to use American-made technology entirely.
This is another significance behind the latest US ban: encouraging the government to use US-made drones.
But "distant water" obviously cannot quench "near thirst". According to VOA, the US Air Force and Navy still bought Chinese-made drones months after the Pentagon banned the military from using Chinese-made drones.
Therefore, the drone ban is also regarded as another "seven injury punches" by the United States.
The New York Times previously reported that 70% of drones in the United States come from DJI. If the current ban takes effect, it will not only have an impact on foreign drone manufacturers such as DJI, but will also have a negative impact on the work of US federal agencies.
And under such a ban, the US government is not without divisions.
A spokesman for DJI said that the ban not only harms the interests of the United States, but also does not solve any cyber security issues, and has been criticized by federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of the Interior, the Department of Fish and Wildlife Services, and even the White House Office of Management and Budget.
