This article introduces how to understand the three service models of cloud computing, IaaS,PaaS and SaaS, the content is very detailed, interested friends can refer to, hope to be helpful to you.
"Cloud service" is becoming a household word now. If you don't know the difference between PaaS, IaaS and SaaS, it doesn't matter, because a lot of people really don't.
"Cloud" is actually a metaphor for the Internet. "Cloud Computing" actually uses the Internet to access applications, data, or services that are stored or run on remote servers.
Any company that uses an Internet-based approach to computing, storage, and development can be technically called a cloud company. However, not all cloud companies are the same. Not everyone is CTO, so sometimes it can be a headache to see some words behind cloud technology.
Clouds are also layered
Any company that provides its services on the Internet can be called a cloud computing company. In fact, cloud computing is divided into several layers, namely Infrastructure (infrastructure)-as-a-Service,Platform (platform)-as-a-Service,Software (software)-as-a-Service. Infrastructure is at the bottom, platform is in the middle, and software is at the top. Other "soft" layers can be added to these layers.
IaaS: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Infrastructure as a Service)
The first layer is called IaaS, sometimes called Hardware-as-a-Service. A few years ago, if you wanted to run some enterprise applications on the office or the company's website, you needed to buy a server or other expensive hardware to control the local applications and get your business running.
But now that there is IaaS, you can outsource the hardware somewhere else. IaaS will provide off-site servers, storage and network hardware that you can rent. Saving maintenance costs and office space, companies can use this hardware to run their applications at any time.
Some big IaaS companies include Amazon, Microsoft, VMWare, Rackspace and Red Hat. However, these companies have their own expertise, such as Amazon and Microsoft not only provide you with IaaS, they will also rent their computing power to you to host your website.
PaaS: Platform-as-a-Service (platform as a Service)
The second layer is the so-called PaaS, which is sometimes called middleware. All the development of your company can be carried out at this level, saving time and resources.
PaaS provides a variety of solutions for developing and distributing applications, such as virtual servers and operating systems, online. This saves you money on hardware and makes it easier to collaborate between distributed studios. Web application management, application design, application hosting, storage, security and application development collaboration tools.
Some of the big PaaS providers have Google App Engine,Microsoft Azure,Force.com,Heroku,Engine Yard. Recent emerging companies include AppFog, Mendix and Standing Cloud
SaaS: Software-as-a-Service (Software as a Service)
The third layer is also called SaaS. This layer is the one that comes into contact with your life every day, mostly through a web browser. Any application on a remote server can be run over the network, which is called SaaS.
The services you consume enter these categories entirely from web pages such as Netflix, MOG, Google Apps, Box.net, Dropbox or Apple's iCloud. Although these web services are used for business and entertainment or both, they are also part of cloud technology.
Some SaaS applications used for business include Citrix's GoToMeeting,Cisco, WebEx,Salesforce 's CRM,ADP,Workday and SuccessFactors.
Comparison between Iaas and Paas
The main role of PaaS is to provide a development and running platform as a service to users, while the main role of IaaS is to provide virtual machines or other resources to users as services. Next, you will compare PaaS and IaaS in seven ways:
1) Development environment: PaaS basically provides developers with a complete set of development and testing environment, including IDE, while IaaS users are mainly familiar with that development environment, but it is not very convenient to use because the previous development environment is lack of integration with the cloud.
2) supported applications: because IaaS mainly provides virtual machines, and ordinary virtual functions support a variety of operating systems, the range of applications supported by IaaS is very wide. However, it is not easy to make an application run on a certain PaaS platform, because you not only need to ensure that the application is based on the language supported by the platform, but also make sure that the application can only call the API supported by the platform. If the application calls the API that the platform does not support, then you need to modify the application.
3) Open standards: although many IaaS platforms have certain proprietary functions, due to the existence of protocols such as OVF, IaaS is making steady progress in terms of cross-platform and avoiding being locked by suppliers. On the other hand, the situation of the PaaS platform is not optimistic, because there is a certain private API in both Google's App Engine and Salesforce's Force.com.
4) scalability: the PaaS platform automatically adjusts resources to help applications running on it better cope with sudden traffic. On the other hand, the IaaS platform requires developers to manually adjust resources to cope with it.
5) Integration rate and economy: the integration rate of PaaS platform is very high. For example, Google App Engine, the representative of PaaS, can carry thousands of applications on a server, while the integration rate of ordinary IaaS platform is not more than 100 at most, and it is generally around 10, which makes IaaS less economical than PaaS.
6) Billing and supervision: because PaaS platform not only reaches the operating system level that IaaS platform can achieve in terms of billing and supervision, such as CPU and memory usage, but also achieves the application level, such as application response time (Response Time) or the number of transactions consumed by the application, which will improve the accuracy of billing and management.
7) Learning difficulty: because the development and management of applications on IaaS is close to the existing way, while the development of PaaS may need to learn a new language or framework, so it is less difficult to learn IaaS.
PaaSIaaS development environment perfect general support application limited versatility lack of better scalability automatic scalability manual expansion integration rate and economic high integration rate more economical low integration rate billing and supervision fine simple learning difficulty is slightly lower
