Google is committed to ensuring the security of user accounts by enabling two-factor authentication by default. The company wants you to stop relying on passwords to protect your account.
In a blog post on Thursday, the company said it plans to prompt users to enable two-factor authentication. Only accounts that benefit from this setting need to confirm the identity of the user. Soon, two-factor authentication will become the standard for all accounts.
Mark Risher, senior director of product management at Google, said, "logging in with a mobile device provides people with a more secure and secure authentication experience than using a password alone."
He continued: "passwords are the biggest threat to your online security-passwords are easy to steal, difficult to remember and cumbersome to manage."
Two-factor authentication is a security feature that requires you to provide information other than your password to log in to your account. The code sent to your phone or provided by a special application (such as Google authenticator or authorization) may be something else.
This is part of Google's efforts to "a future without passwords at all", and the announcement coincides with World password Day. Even after several large-scale hacking attacks and password dumping incidents, Google reported that 66 per cent of Americans "still admit to using the same password on multiple websites, and if one account is lost, it will make all of these accounts vulnerable".
Google encourages customers to conduct quick security checks to ensure that account settings and safeguards are up-to-date.
This is not the only step Google has taken to enhance Internet security. Since 2016, all websites that do not use HTTPS web page encryption have been marked as insecure. In a sense, it can be seen as a way to force websites to switch to safer alternatives.
