Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 865 may be big news at the company's annual technology summit, but the company also announced details of another new chip, the Mid-range Snapdragon 765. Due to the integration of 5G modems and the possibility of supplying power to cheaper midrange devices, the 765 may actually be one of the more interesting.

At present, there are not many 5G devices, and peripherals are often very expensive. The upcoming 865 may help. By default, it can only be used with X55 5G modems, which means that theoretically every Android flagship (that is, almost all flagships) with Snapdragon 865 will become a 5G phone next year. However, even cheaper Android phones with Qualcomm's top processors tend to cost as much as $750. On the other hand, 700 series chips are found in much cheaper phones (such as D Nokia phones), which are much cheaper.

Compared with any method currently available, the entry threshold for 5G is much lower.

This is a much lower threshold for 5G to enter the market than any current product, and it may also be an important part of connecting more customers (not just those willing to buy top phones) to next-generation networks.

In fact, the Snapdragon 765 may provide a better 5G experience than an 865 phone. This is because, unlike the Snapdragon 865, the X52 modem of the 765 is weak. It is even slower (up to 3.7 Gbps, not the 7 Gbps that X55 can theoretically achieve). But it has one big advantage: the 5G modem is integrated directly into the 765 chipset, which means it should provide higher power efficiency (thus extending battery life) than the X55 (which is its own independent chip). It will also support a wider range of 5G standards than current X50 modems. Qualcomm is committed to supporting millimeter waves and independent and independent 5G below 6 GHz, as well as supporting TDD and FDD of dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) network types.

As for the performance of the Snapdragon 765, Qualcomm promises to improve AI processing and provide better support for multi-camera systems. There is also a variant of the Snapdragon 765G, which carries the new Qualcomm epinephrine 620 GPU. The company says its performance is 20% better than the standard Snapdragon 765. (this is similar to Snapdragon 855 Plus.)

Qualcomm expects to see phones equipped with Snapdragon 765 and 765G in the first quarter of 2020.
