Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--
This article mainly introduces how to reduce the Oracle database License and support costs, has a certain reference value, interested friends can refer to, I hope you can learn a lot after reading this article, the following let the editor with you to understand.
Let's first take a look at the cost composition of an ordinary medium-sized ORACLE ordinary database (excluding RAC). The following data I directly quote the analysis of a foreign blog website, although a little old, but basically can explain the problem.
This is a hypothetical condition. The storage uses ordinary mid-range storage and the capacity is 10TB.
This is the price situation. As we all know, the License of Oracle Enterprise Edition is calculated according to the core number of CPU.
When we look at the price composition of the entire system, we find that storage accounts for only 17% of the total cost, while the cost of Oracle databases (including License and services) accounts for 80%.
This is the situation of small and medium-sized enterprises, although outrageous, but not the highest. Let's take a look at the more outrageous Oralce RAC situation. Generally speaking, large enterprises use RAC, usually 4 nodes to provide high availability.
The premise of the assumption remains the same, except that the capacity changes from 10TB to 20TB.
This is the price situation. Four servers are configured here to build a 4-node Oracle RAC cluster.
This is the composition of the price. We see that storage accounts for only 8% of the total cost, while Oracle's License and services together account for 89% of the total cost. You say, it's not a robbery. What is it?
From the above analysis, we can see that the cost of Oracle generally accounts for more than 80%, that is, it is the largest part of the whole investment.
Therefore, if you choose Oracle, only buy as few Oracle License as possible, which can reduce the cost of License a lot, and thus reduce the cost of services. And other hardware, try not to become a performance bottleneck.
Therefore, the principle of saving money is:
1. Use the most efficient CPU to unload various processes to storage as far as possible, such as re-deletion and compression.
2. Using the fastest server and all-flash memory array, so that the external hardware can not become a bottleneck, give full play to the role of purchasing License.
So, how to choose the most efficient CPU? As we all know, Oracle's License is charged according to CPU and core number, and there are different coefficients for different processor types. Many vendors test various servers on TPC.ORG. You can check the open values of TPC-C, download the latest TPC-C results, and then calculate them yourself. Although the following calculation results are old, they are still illustrative, so I will directly use them to tell the story.
We can see that different processor types have different CPU Factor, and different processors have different cores. Based on their TPC-C scores, the performance of each ORACLE License can be calculated. As a result, INTEL's CPU has the highest performance per unit of License compared to IBM's POWER, even more than 10 times the relationship.
Therefore, it is the most economical way to choose the open minicomputer of X86 architecture as the database server. For example, you can choose Huawei's Kunlun high-end server, which has the reliability of minicomputer, but supports the latest INTEL CPU, which is very suitable for use in critical ORACLE data scenarios.
As for storage, in order to be easy to use and not become a bottleneck in system performance, I recommend all-flash arrays and preferably support online compression. For example, Huawei's newly released Dorado V3 is designed for all-flash memory. The stable delay of open-delete compression is also lower than 0.5ms, and it also supports symmetrical array dual-activation, which can form a highly available dual-active system with Oracle RAC to achieve higher reliability. The key is that the re-delete compression can be flexibly turned on or off (with LUN granularity). For example, in ORACLE database scenarios, the open compression performance is lossless, and the compression ratio can generally be achieved at 2:1. While re-deletion has basically no effect on the database, and even has a negative effect (for example, the control file and redolog are usually two copies for reliability, it is even more insecure if you delete it again), you can choose to close it to avoid wasting storage resources. Of course, you can do compression at the ORACLE level, but ORACLE requires License and takes up the resources of the server CPU, which will lead to an increase in ORACLE costs.
Of course, in addition to using the most efficient hardware, maximize the performance of ORACLE, so that you can buy less License, there are other ways.
As we all know, the standard version of Oracle is charged according to the physical CPU, while the enterprise version is charged according to the audit of CPU.
Now INTEL's single server CPU is already very powerful, even with dozens of cores, so if you can adopt ORACLE Standard Edition, you may save a lot of money on ORACLE. The biggest limitation of the standard version is that it only supports four physical CPU, but now the performance of a single CPU is strong enough that most enterprises should be able to meet it.
This is the price of Standard Edition + RAC. Assuming that CPU is more powerful, only 2 nodes need to be configured.
Compared with the price of the original enterprise version of 4-node RAC, the overall investment decreased by 87%. This is a very big savings.
If the enterprise version is only 2-node RAC, then the cost savings are 76%. Therefore, if the standard version can meet the requirements, then your savings are really amazing.
Then there is the necessity of ORACLE RAC. As you know, the cost of RAC is very high, accounting for more than 50% of the enterprise version of License. At the beginning, RAC was mainly used to expand performance, at that time it was called OPS, mainly because the performance of the stand-alone was not enough at that time. But now the performance of the stand-alone is basically not a problem, so the biggest selling point of RAC is high availability. So, you can assess whether your business needs such a high level of business continuity? Is there any other way to solve these problems? Because ORACL RAC parallel processing is more complex (requires clustered file systems, shared locks, etc.), the system is much simpler if it is used as an active and standby mode. Moreover, now that virtualization technology is so mature, for example, you can consider deploying ORACLE on cloud platforms such as Huawei's FusionSphere. In this way, we can take advantage of the online migration capability of the cloud platform to reduce the impact of system updates on the business. Of course, virtualization will bring many benefits, but there is also a certain performance loss (for example, the test read delay of a blogger changes from 0.44ms to 0.6ms), which may lead to an increase in License costs, which needs to be taken into account.
