Cloud desktops are data centers that store operating systems, applications, and user data in the back end. Cloud desktops use virtualization technology to centralize PC desktops and deliver desktops to users through the network, which can effectively improve deployment efficiency, simplify desktop operation and maintenance, and solve the contradiction between IT supply and demand and enterprise information security.
The user data in the cloud desktop mainly includes the user's personal archive files as well as the configuration and download files of some applications. Since archiving and downloading files are involved, its storage location has become a major problem, which will have a significant impact on the storage performance of the system. In general, personal data can be shared or local, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:
It is a common way to put user data in shared storage. After logging in to the cloud desktop, the user's personal data disk is automatically mounted through the policy. This data disk is a network mapping disk, which is stored in shared storage such as file server, cloud disk or NAS.
The advantage of this method is that the configuration and maintenance is simple, the cost is relatively low, and the disadvantage is poor performance and stability. Because all the documents of cloud desktop users are basically saved in personal data disks, users' operations on documents result in shared storage processing a large number of read and write IO all the time. If the shared storage IOPS is not enough or the ability to handle IO is not enough, the work efficiency of cloud desktop users will be affected. In essence, the stability of the network mapping disk depends on the network stability. If the network fluctuates greatly or the latency is high, it will lead to poor interaction experience of cloud desktop users.
Another way is to store personal data on a local disk, usually when the user logs in to a fixed cloud desktop virtual machine, and the user's data is saved to a new disk for the user to save personal data.
The advantage of this approach is high stability, users operate documents on the local disk, do not rely on the external network. However, it also has the disadvantage of troublesome configuration and maintenance. At present, most of the cloud desktop products on the market do not support automatic configuration. Users need to manually add disks to each cloud desktop on the server virtualization platform, and the administrator can format the disk before using it. This way is time-consuming, labor-consuming and error-prone, and the disks are scattered, and it is troublesome to manage and maintain.
Cloud Hongchao integrates the personal data storage of cloud desktop to optimize the above two methods.
One is to support cloud desktop personal data storage in shared storage, but shared storage is provided by distributed storage. Distributed storage pool does not go through virtualized multi-layer encapsulation, and the data storage path is shorter, which greatly reduces the performance loss; every X86 server is a storage head, a storage path, and the performance is better in the scenario of concurrent IO; using SSD as the IO cache space is much larger than the traditional 8GB or 16GB cache, and the performance is more stable under high load.
Second, it supports the storage of personal data on the local disk, but it improves the trouble of configuration and the difficulty of data disk maintenance. When a user logs in to the cloud desktop for the first time, the system will automatically generate a disk named by the user name on the storage pool according to the required capacity space, and automatically mount it to the cloud desktop where the user is logged in and format it automatically. In the whole process, the operation and maintenance personnel only need to set the space size of the default personal data disk of the cloud desktop group on the system, and the rest can be completed automatically by the system; the personal data disk can also be managed and maintained in the cloud desktop management platform, which greatly simplifies the operation and maintenance work of maintenance personnel and improves work efficiency.
