● supports online transaction processing (OLTP) and online Analytical processing (OLAP), which work on a variety of systems that may have common data. Distributed database systems assist these processes by providing synchronous data.

● even if some data nodes are offline, the rest of the database can continue its normal function.

Shortcomings of DDBMS

● complexity: distributed databases are so complex that it is difficult to ensure that users get a unified view of the database because it is distributed in multiple locations.

● is difficult to maintain: distributed databases are complex and it is difficult to find people with the necessary experience to manage and maintain it.

● costs are high: the increased complexity means that we expect higher procurement and maintenance costs than regular databases. In addition, distributed DBMS requires additional hardware to build a network between sites; using this network results in ongoing communication costs. Additional labor costs are required to manage and maintain the local DBMS and the underlying network.

● security: providing security in a distributed database is difficult because the database needs to be protected in all its storage locations. In addition, you need to protect the infrastructure that connects to all nodes in the distributed database.

● data integrity: because of its nature, it is difficult to maintain data integrity in a distributed database. There is data redundancy in the database because it is stored in multiple locations.
