On Tuesday, Apple quietly launched the personal Security user Guide to help "anyone who is worried about or has experienced technology abuse, tracking or harassment." The guide is a resource center that helps people figure out what their options are if they want to remove someone's access to shared information and the personal security features available in the Apple ecosystem. Most notably, it includes a "keep safe with AirTag and other find my accessories" page, at a time when more and more people come forward to say they are being tracked by these devices.

As 9to5Mac points out, the center is mainly repackaging data privacy guidelines that were first released about a year ago. In general, it's a good thing to create an easily accessible resource to help people protect their information or figure out what to do when their security is compromised. The center is divided into an introductory interpreter, a section called "Review and take Action", a personal security checklist and a list of available security and privacy tools. In addition to AirTag security, the guide addresses issues such as blocking unknown login attempts, how to store data securely in iCloud, how to set up Touch and FaceID, and how to control how others view your location.

Although the guide is helpful, the time is not surprising. In the past few weeks, several media outlets, including CNBC, BBC News, the Guardian and the New York Times, have reported several cases in which users have received alerts tracked by unknown AirTag. Others shared their personal experiences directly on social media such as TikTok, and Sports Illustrated model Brooks Nader shared her own experiences in her Instagram story in early January.

Although the guide is helpful, the time is not surprising.

When AirTags was launched in April 2021, Apple stressed that these devices had built-in anti-tracking measures. This includes notifications and audible alerts sent to the AirTag when it is detected that the iPhone is moving over time. However, some commentators strongly criticized the measures as inadequate, especially since it initially took three days for AirTags to issue an audible alarm. Apple then changes it to a random period of 8 to 24 hours after it is separated from the owner's iPhone. Apple has also recently released a Tracker Detect application to help Android users scan for unwanted AirTag nearby. Pennsylvania representative John Galloway also proposed legislation prohibiting AirTags from being used for any purpose other than finding lost items.
