1. What is Performance Testing?

Performance testing refers to exerting pressure on the tested system according to a certain strategy in a specific way to obtain performance indicators such as system response time, concurrent users, throughput, resource utilization, etc., in order to ensure the performance of the production system.

Number of concurrent users: The number of concurrent users refers to the number of user requests that the system can process at the same time. It can also be understood as the number of users who submit requests to the system at the same time. Registered users refer to the number of all registered users in the system; online users refer to the number of users who log in to the system and operate in the system within the same time period.

Throughput: throughput refers to the number of customer requests processed by the system per unit time, reflecting the overall processing capacity of the system. The higher the system throughput, the better the system performance. Common metrics for throughput include: RPS, PPS, PV, TPS, QPS

Resource utilization: Resource utilization refers to the utilization rate of CPU, memory, hard disk, external storage and network bandwidth of database server, application server and web server during load operation of the system.

According to experience, less than 20% of the utilization rate for idle resources, 20%--60% of the utilization rate for stable resource use, 60%--80%

The utilization rate of indicates that resource utilization is saturated. Resource utilization rate exceeding 80% must be adjusted and optimized as soon as possible.

2. The scope of software performance testing is wide, usually including execution efficiency, resource occupation, stability, security, compatibility, scalability, reliability, etc.

3 Different roles in understanding software performance

1) Software performance from the point of view of system users System users refer to the personnel who actually use the system functions. The software performance seen by the system user is the response time of the software, that is, after the user performs a functional operation in the software, the software fully displays the results of this operation to the user. System response time is affected by the following factors: granularity of functions, client network conditions, current server busy and idle conditions, etc. From a system user perspective, the shorter the software response time, the better the system performance.

2) From the perspective of system operation and maintenance personnel, software performance System operation and maintenance personnel refer to the staff responsible for the operation and maintenance of software systems. While paying attention to system response time, operation and maintenance personnel also need to pay attention to system resource utilization rate, system maximum capacity, system access volume change trend, data volume growth range, system expansion capacity, etc., and formulate reasonable system maintenance plan on this basis to ensure that the system can provide stable and reliable continuous service for users. It mainly focuses on the server status when the system is running, such as CPU utilization, memory usage, etc., whether the system can be expanded, how many users the system supports, system stability, and whether it supports 7*24 hours of business access.

3) From the perspective of developers, whether the software performance architecture design is reasonable, whether the database design is reasonable, whether there are performance problems in the code, and whether there are unreasonable memory usage methods in the system.
