This article mainly introduces Vista EFS encryption function how, the text is very detailed, has a certain reference value, interested friends must read!
Since Windows 2000, Microsoft has provided us with an encryption feature called EFS, through which we can encrypt files saved on NTFS partitions so that others cannot open them. Although this feature has been available for a long time, many people do not understand this feature, resulting in a lot of data loss.
In fact, from the design point of view, EFS encryption is a very secure public key encryption method, as long as others can not obtain your private key, then with the current level of technology is completely impossible to crack. Compared to other encryption software, EFS*** has the advantage of being tightly integrated with the system and transparent to the user. For example, if user A encrypts a file, only user A can open it. When user A logs in to Windows, the system has verified the legitimacy of user A. In this case, user A can directly open his encrypted file in Windows Explorer and edit it. When saving, the edited content will be automatically encrypted and merged into the file. In this process, the user does not need to enter his password repeatedly, or manually decrypt and re-encrypt, so EFS is very convenient to use.
Operating systems that fully support EFS encryption and decryption include all versions of Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium can only open EFS encrypted files with a key, but cannot encrypt new files.
To introduce you to the use of this feature, the following are examples of operations in Windows Vista Ultimate, which also apply to Windows Vista Business and Enterprise editions. Other Windows operating systems that support EFS may differ in details.
Encryption and decryption of files is very simple, we only need to right-click the file or folder we want to encrypt or decrypt in Windows Explorer, select "Properties" to open the "General" tab of the "Properties" dialog box, and then click the "Advanced" button to open the "Advanced Properties" dialog box.
Opens the Advanced Properties dialog box to encrypt or decrypt files
If you want to encrypt the file or folder, check Encrypt Content to Protect Data; if you want to decrypt the file or folder, check Encrypt Content to Protect Data and click OK; if the object you choose to encrypt or decrypt is a folder that contains subfolders or files, click OK and we will see the Confirm Property Change dialog box.
In the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box, select the extent to which the encryption or decryption operation applies
Here, we can decide to which objects the property change applies. For example, if you want to encrypt or decrypt the subfolders and files contained in the folder at the same time, you can select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files; if you want to encrypt or decrypt only the folder, you can select Apply changes to this folder only.
By default, encrypted files or folders appear green in Windows Explorer to alert us. If you do not want to use this feature, you can change the default settings as follows:
1. Open Computer-My Computer, or if Windows Vista, press Alt to open the menu bar.
2. On the menu bar, click Tools Folder Options to open the Folder Options dialog box and the View tab.
3. In the Advanced Settings list, uncheck the option "Display encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color."
4. Click OK.
A lot of people lose when they use EFS encryption. As mentioned above, EFS is a public key encryption system, so both encryption and decryption operations require the participation of certificates (also called keys). For example, many people operate like this: encrypt files with EFS in the system, reinstall the operating system directly one day for some reason, and create accounts with the same username and password as the old system, but find that they have encrypted files before.
