The so-called extraterritorial controller refers to the domain controller other than the first domain controller. When installing multiple domain controllers in the same domain, you will have the following advantages:

* improve the efficiency of user login. Because multiple domain controllers can share the work of auditing users at the same time, the login speed of users can be accelerated. When there are a large number of users in the network, or when a variety of network services need identity authentication, multiple extraterritorial controllers should be installed.

* provide fault tolerance. Even if one of the domain controllers fails, other domain controllers can still provide services so that users can log in normally and provide user authentication.

* there is no need to backup the active directory. When there is more than one domain controller (DC,Domain Controller) in the domain, the domain controllers can replicate and back up each other. Therefore, when you reinstall one of the DC, backing up the Active Directory is not necessary, just remove it from the domain, reinstall it, and bring it back to the domain, and the other DC will automatically copy the data to this DC. That is, if there is only or only the last DC left in a domain, a backup of the Active Directory is necessary and necessary.

When installing additional domain controllers, you need to copy the active directory database from the existing domain controller to this new domain controller. Windows Server 2003 provides two ways to replicate active directory databases:

* replicating through the network if the active directory database has more content, this method will affect the network efficiency.

* back up the "system state data" of the domain controller in the domain through the backed-up "system state data (System State)", and then restore it to the newly created external controller. For backup and restore of active catalog databases, see the following.

Tip: if the active directory database is very large, the replication work is bound to increase the network burden and reduce the response rate of the original domain controller. Therefore, the installation of extraterritorial controllers should be carried out during non-working hours as far as possible to reduce the impact on normal work.

Install out-of-domain controller

Before installing an out-of-domain controller, the following preparations should be made:

* add a computer account to the domain controller for the computer you want to act as a domain controller, and select the assign this computer account as a backup domain controller check box.

Be sure to install and set up the DNS server on the network, connect the computer to the network, and set the IP address information of the computer correctly. Otherwise, the installation process will fail.
