The two iOS and Android platforms announced by Spotify, the update of its mobile app, provide users with new ways to access their recently played tracks and discover new music. The redesigned Home interface will be available to users around the world from this month and feature updates for free members and Premium subscribers.

This update adds or adjusts three main features-better access to listening history, podcast tracking and discovery, and a more prominent and responsive "new version" section.

The first one is displayed at the top of the home screen in the form of a small "history" icon, close to the setting, and displays a three-month listening history in the form of a single track, including playlists or albums of these music. These songs were accessed from there.

For advanced subscribers, the six blocks at the top of the home screen will now display progress bars on the podcast clips you have started, and new clips will be displayed for subsequent podcasts, marked with blue dots.

Finally, another Premium exclusive feature is a new section that sits under six tiles to highlight the artist's new work, which Spotify claims will be "personalized, timely and responsive to your taste".

Listening habit

The side effect of the music streaming service and its "recently played" section is that it is easy for them to get into the habit of listening regularly. Often, this may come at the expense of discovering new music, or even rediscovering artists of the not-so-distant past.

While Spotify can solve this problem by focusing on discovery (based on its famous algorithm), the latest updates may help hinder the audience to the greatest extent possible.

Removing "recently played" tiles from the home screen will undoubtedly help develop these habits, diluting the first six tiles with new podcast content and additional "new release" sections.

But what about three months of listening records? Although it will not be displayed directly on the home screen, it can be obtained at one click, in more detail than ever before. This time range is likely to be large enough to free the listener from the short listening cycle, but on the other hand, because of its granularity, it may only make the habit more thorough.

It is not clear how "active" the new version will be-- we hope it will meet the company's requirements-- as the constantly refreshing new content sampler will greatly help break these listening cycles.
