In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the important role of software in providing power to HCI solutions. In fact, software has become the key to making data centers more agile and efficient (software products span all stacks, including computing, storage, networking, management, and public clouds), helping data centers easily evolve into evolving hybrid cloud environments.

In this report, Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) refers to a super-converged infrastructure, and Gartner is positioned as a pure software form. Therefore, the magic quadrant and key capabilities of HCI only evaluate software capabilities, because this is how customers evaluate their purchases, and then consider the hardware platform after selecting the software.

In spite of this, among the manufacturers entering the HCI magic quadrant, it is not only pure software companies, but also Nutanix, Dell EMC, VMware and HPE in the leader quadrant. Nutanix is the concept of super-integration, and there is no doubt about its position as a leader. Nutanix believes that with its enterprise cloud operating system software, users can not only achieve the simplicity and agility of the public cloud and part of the IT consumption benefits, but also ensure the high controllability and security of the enterprise data center. In a unified IT operating environment that combines private, public and distributed clouds, Nutanix enterprise cloud operating system software provides a single point of control to manage any cloud infrastructure and applications, thus providing a unified, high-performance, seamless experience for cloud operators and users of cloud-delivered services and applications.

VMware's market influence, into the leader is also understandable. According to the report, VMware offers the broadest range of superconverged solutions, both as turnkey software appliances and as rack-level software-defined data center solutions (VMware Cloud Foundation) or HCIaaS, to meet a variety of organizations that need performance, scalability, security, and total cost of ownership (TCO).

But Dell EMC should not be pure software form. According to a press release issued on Dell EMC, the Dell EMC super-convergence product, represented by VxRail, is the only fully integrated, pre-configured VMware software super-convergence product on the market, which has won wide market recognition as soon as it was launched. Now VxRail has been enhanced by Dell PowerEdge 14G server and can achieve a leading position in just two years of launch, which is the best affirmation of VxRail.

Another conspicuous company is Huawei. It is understood that Huawei FusionCube follows open architecture standards, integrates computing, storage, network, virtualization and management, and pre-integrates FusionStorage distributed storage engine and management software such as FusionCube Center and FusionCube Builder. It supports mainstream virtualization software such as FusionSphere, VMware and KVM, supports mixed deployment of physical and virtualized environments, and supports connection to Huawei public cloud and Microsoft Azure, allowing enterprises to evolve to hybrid clouds more quickly.

In the report, there are three descriptions of Huawei's advantages: although FusionCube has recently been positioned as HCI, it has been applied and verified in a number of vertical fields in Asia and Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Huawei has built a strong base of ecosystem partners, including Oracle, SAP,VMware, Microsoft, Red Hat and SUSE, enabling the company to penetrate new markets. FusionCube Cloud user cases ROBO and VDI take full advantage of the installation base of Huawei's network infrastructure.

HCI, a new business-centric architecture that integrates computing, storage, network, management and other resources, not only has the advantages of high performance, high reliability, flexible expansion and low cost of distributed Scale-out architecture, but also greatly simplifies management, so it is favored by the data center market as soon as it is launched. But at present, in terms of the distribution of manufacturers in the magic quadrant, there are not many who can play "tricks" in this circle, and there is still a lot of market space to speak of.
