Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

What is Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC)? Enhanced vMotion compatibility

Enhanced vMotion compatibility (Enhanced vMotion Compatibility, EVC) ensures that all hosts in the cluster provide the same CPU feature set to virtual machines. Use EVC to avoid failed migration through vMotion due to CPU incompatibility.

Enabling EVC does not prevent virtual machines from taking advantage of faster processor speeds, more CPU cores, or hardware virtualization support that may be available on newer hosts.

Through the online hot migration scheme supported by the bottom layer of CPU hardware (Intel through Flex Migration and AMD through Extended Migration), it allows CPUID mask function to be supported on the virtual level, shielding some CPU functions, and realizing online hot migration between different CPU series by forcing CPU instruction set compatibility.

When VI launched EVC, all the manual work was done by VC and ESXI Server. Through cooperation with CPU manufacturers, vmware directly supports the CPUID mask function on the underlying hardware.

EVC CPU support Matrix

The EVC mode is different in different versions of ESXi, and in ESXi 6.5, the options supported by Intel CPU include the following:

Intel Merom Generation

Intel Penryn Generation

Intel Nehalen Generation

Intel Westmere Generation

Intel Sandy Bridge Generation

Intel ivy Bridge Generation

Intel Haswell Generation

Intel Broadwell Generation

The options that AMD supports CPU support include the following:

AMD Opteron Generation 1 ("Rev. E")

AMD Opteron Generation 2 ("Rev. F")

AMD Opteron Generation 3 ("Greyhound") (3DNow is not supported)

AMD Opteron Generation 3 ("Greyhound")

AMD Opteron Generation 4 ("Bulldozer")

AMD Opteron "Piledriver" Generation

AMD Opteron "Steamroller" Generation

When there are multiple ESXi hosts of different models on the network, if the hosts are the same, make a note of the last item in the supported EVC modes list. When hosts with different EVC mode support are created into the same cluster, the EVC option supports the last item of the least number of hosts.
